Each week, Daily Herald sports writers Darnell Dickson and Brandon C. Gurney rank the top five teams in the Utah Valley in football, girls soccer and girls volleyball (records as of August 31):

FOOTBALL

1. Skyridge (2-1)

QB Jagger Fountaine’s late TD pass sends Falcons past Hun, NJ, 31-24.

2. American Fork (2-1)

Cavemen impressive in 28-26 victory vs. Timpview.

3. Lone Peak (2-1)

Cruz Christensen with four TD tosses in 45-3 victory vs. Skyline.

4. Orem (1-2)

Tigers gave California power Mater Dei a great game but lost 32-26.

5. Spanish Fork (2-1)

James Buck with 336 rushing yards the past two weeks for Dons.

GIRLS SOCCER 

1. American Fork (8-1)

Cavemen’s senior heavy team getting impressive early results.

2. Pleasant Grove (8-0)

Led by standout goalkeeper Savanna Facer, the Vikings have yet to drop a match this season.

3. Lone Peak (6-3)

Knights have hit a good stride, winning five straight after starting the season 1-3.

4. Maple Mountain (4-3)

Golden Eagles enter the rankings on the heels of impressive wins over Timpview and Springville.

5. Lehi (6-4)

Pioneers had a rough week, losing two matches last week and will look to rebound versus region foes.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

1. Lone Peak (3-0)

Knights with third new coach in past three seasons, still winning.

2. Pleasant Grove (7-1)

Vikings getting great production out of senior Lexie Brown (4.2 kills per set).

3. Lehi (5-1)

Aliya Shewell, Laken Bell have combined for 156 kills in first six matches.

4. Provo (3-0)

Bulldogs open Region 8 play Tuesday at Mountain View.

5. Skyridge (4-2)

Falcons pushed Green Canyon to five sets, topped Orem in four last week.
