Prep Wrestling: Spanish Fork, Timpanogos grab divisional team titles

Wrestlers compete on the first day of the state girls wrestling tournament at the UCCU Center in Orem on Friday, Feb. 14, 2025.Two Utah County teams won their divisional tournaments over the weekend as Spanish Fork claimed the 5A Divisional A meet hosted by Maple Mountain, edging rival Payson while Timpanogos took home the gold trophy at the 4A Divisional B tourney held in St. George at Crimson Cliffs High School.
Spanish Fork scored 296.5 total points while Payson pointed 282 in the 5A tournament. The Dons crowned three individual champions with Easton Shelley (113 pounds), Connor Simons (138), and Ryker Olson (165). Spanish Fork was bolstered by the silver medalist performances of Kyler Spencer (126) and Hyrum King (190).
The Lions put two wrestlers on top of the podium with Jonas Lotz (144) and Kael Theobald (150), while Connor Finch (106) and Malikai Filimoe’atu (285) placed second.
“Things went awesome,” Spanish Fork head coach Kip Spencer said. “We wanted our kids to go attack and see what everyone could give us. No matter where we place, we just want to qualify (for the state tournament).”
The Dons ended up with 17 state qualifiers.
Maple Mountain (202) edged Pleasant Grove (192.5) for third place. Lucas Herbert (120) and William Childs (165) won gold for the Golden Eagles while Jesse Judkins (113) placed second. The Vikings had four runners-up finishes with Wyatt Bingham (144), Derek Harrison (150), Porter Kemp (157), and Ethan Castillo (167).
Lisiate Valeti (190) nailed down an individual title for Springville while his cousin Tuiono placed second at 215 pounds. The Red Devils finished eighth out of 15 teams while Timpview was 14th.
5A Divisional B Tournament (Box Elder)
Wasatch finished second to the host school in the other 5A Division meet. The Wasps put six wrestlers on top of the podium with William Shallenberger (132), Ben Kohler (138), Daxton Bonner (144), Logan McNally (157), Jonah Ware (165), and Wyatt Hanssen (215). Logan Tull placed second at 285.
Salem Hills placed fourth in the 15-team field as Ryder Thomas (106), Bennett Wright (120) and Kingston O’Bannon (190) all won individual titles.
4A Divisional B Tournament (Crimson Cliffs)
Timpanogos won its 4A divisional scoring 333 points and Ridgeline was second with 291.
Noah Ahn (106), Zack Mccann (157), Fisher Jolley (175), and Kaleb Midzinski (190) all won individual gold for the T-Wolves. Midzinski beat teammate Stockton Sondrum in the championship final. Other silver medals for Timpanogos were won by Preston Carter (113), Simon Boyer (132), Channing Francom (150) and Jesse King (285).
4A Divisional A Tournament (Mountain View)
Mountain View finished second as a team as Uintah ran away from the field.
Brigham Cookston (150) still won a title for the Bruins while Porter Judd (126), Chance Blevins (165) and Hyrum Stafford (190) were silver medalists.
Provo and Orem finished 13th and 14th respectively in the 14-team field.
6A Divisional A Tournament (Syracuse)
Westlake finished third behind the 3-time defending 6A champs Layton and host Syracuse.
Placing first for the Thunder were Kaden Oldroyd (113) and Kaizen Detoles (165), while Hayden Ballantyne (120), Corbyn Robison (126), Joe Whitford (138), Calvin Harding (190), and Malikai Leilua (285) placed second. Whitford, just a freshman, lost to Syracuse 3-time state champion Mason Carlson by just an 8-5 count.
American Fork finished sixth in the team standings, led by individual champion Cohen Mortensen (144). Cedar Valley placed eighth out of nine teams at the 6A Divisional A meet.
6A Divisional B Tournament (Riverton)
Corner Canyon came out on top as a team with host Riverton second. Local teams Skyridge placed fourth, Lone Peak fifth and Lehi ninth in the nine-team field.
Skyridge’s Jacob Millward placed first at 138 pounds while his teammate Chandler Curtis was the runner-up at 175 pounds. Lone Peak’s Patrick O’Banion bested the field at 285-pounds.
2A Divisional B Tourney (Parowan)
American Leadership Academy (ALA) finished fifth out of nine competing schools. Jesus Lopez (285) climbed to the top of the podium while his teammate Kael Worthen (175) placed second. Meanwhile, the Utah Military Academy-Camp Williams team finished ninth in the nine-team field.

6A Girls Divisional B Tournament (Syracuse)
Cedar Valley edged out rival Westlake by scoring 288 points to the Thunder total of 268. Host Syracuse (198) placed third.
Nevi Brady (100), Isabella Munton (105), Alexandra Gates (140), and Rylyn Denney (235) won individual titles for Cedar Valley, while their Aviator teammates MaKray Monson (125), Isabella Peterson (145), and Hallie Denney (155) obtained silver medals.
Westlake had four individual champions with Kennedy Jeppson (110), Marley Michaelis (135), Elenoa Vaki (145), and Tevia Rarick (190). Rarick moved her record to perfect 39-0 with 39 pins. Placing second for the Thunder were Ashlyn Ballantyne (115) and Maleihina Falepapalangi (235).
Skyridge, which finished fifth as a team, had one champion with Maddison Sherman at 155 pounds. American Fork finished eighth and Lone Peak tenth in the 10-team field.
6A Girls Divisional A Tournament (Riverton)
Lehi placed sixth out of seven 6A participating programs in the Divisional A competition, won by Mountain Ridge with 292 points.
5A Girls Divisional A Tournament (Box Elder)
Two-time defending champion Wasatch won the division, edging out host Box Elder. Springville placed third while Payson and Timpview were tenth and 12th respectively out of 14 participating programs.
Tyler Rodriguez (105), Maisey Blaser (115), Makenzi McCoy (120), Kaelyn Alleman (125), Marabelle Brown (130), and Dakota Frogge (145) all nailed down individual titles for the Wasps while Delanie Knight (115) and Keira Kohler (135) were silver medalists.
Emmary Brimhall (140) and Heather Weakley (190) were runners-up for Springville.
5A Girls Divisional B Tournament (Pleasant Grove)
Salem Hills placed second to Northridge and crowned four individual champions. Winning titles for the Skyhawks were Makayla Carrick (125), Rachel Jensen (140), Avery Winterton (145), and Ruby Lindstrom (155). Addie Brindley (110), Hannah Coyne (115) and Sheyla Hawley (135) placed second.
Maple Mountain finished 11th as a team and had Sage Eggleston win an individual title at 130 pounds while her Golden Eagle teammate Riah Tingey placed second at 120 pounds.
Pleasant Grove finished just ahead of the Golden Eagles in 10th place while Spanish Fork finished 15th out of 16 teams as Olivia Adams (140) placed second for the Dons.
4A Girls Divisional A Tournament (Crimson Cliffs)
Provo was the only Utah County team that participated and the Bulldogs placed 11th out of 12 competing teams. Uintah won the divisional while the returning 4A champs Bear River were second.
4A Girls Divisional Tournament (Mountain View)
The host school placed third. Meanwhile, Orem placed ninth and Timpanogos 13th out of the 15 participating schools. Mountain Crest won the divisional while its Cache Valley rival Ridgeline was second.
Ximena Hernandez (100) and Sophia Stoddard (155) won individual titles for Mountain View, while Sabrina Feliz (110), Jasmine Townsend, and Josalyn Moore (170) placed second. Orem’s Sophia Johnson topped the field at 130 pounds.
1A/2A Girls Divisional B Tournament (Enterprise)
ALA finished seventh out of 11 competing teams and had Ryan Hiss win a title at 110 pounds while Baily Tanner placed second at 145 pounds. Tintic finished ninth and crowned two champions with Madaleigh Grimstead (100) and Jasmine Street (110).
