6A State Wrestling Preview: Westlake among boys challengers, girls field open
From Wednesday until Saturday, the UCCU Event Center on the campus of Utah Valley University will be center stage of the 4A through 6A boys and girls state championship meets. The meets draw the biggest high school crowds in the state as team and individual champions are crowned Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings.
Here’s a preview for what’s in store.
6A Boys Meet Preview
Layton goes for its fourth straight state title. The Lancers were bolstered by move-in Austin Paris (157 pounds) who was a 3-time state champion in 2A at Grand County. He is considered one of the best grapplers in his weight in the entire country.
The race for the silver trophy looks to be intriguing. Five schools have realistic shots including Westlake which brings back returning state champion Kaizen Detoles (175) and Corbyn Robison (126), who won a title two seasons ago. Other schools in the mix will be Davis, Riverton, Syracuse and Divisional B champs Corner Canyon.
Weight to Watch
The 138-pound weight class is loaded with great wrestlers and great story lines. Westlake has a burgeoning superstar in freshman Joe Whitford Jr. If he stays healthy and continues to progress, he’ll certainly become one of the great ones from the Beehive State. But to win four state titles he will have to knock off another Utah County wrestler that has his own aspirations of glory. Last year Skyridge’s Jacob Millward won a state title at 113 pounds as a freshman. These two are likely to meet in the semifinals.
Finalist Predictions
106 pounds: Reid Harris (Syracuse) vs.Garrett Bracken (Riverton)
113 pounds: Kaden Oldroyd (Westlake) vs. Blake Mauch (Corner Canyon)

6A Girls Meet Preview
The 6A girls state tournament might be the most wide open and most fun tournament, boys or girls. One could peg returning state champs Mountain Ridge as the favorite as the Sentinels did win their divisional tournament.
But right on their heels are two Utah Valley programs in Cedar Valley and Westlake. The Aviators edged out the Thunder to win their divisional tournament. But there are other programs that have realistic shots to walk away with the title in Copper Hills, Corner Canyon, Herriman and Syracuse.
Westlake’s Tevia Rarick (190) looks to complete an undefeated season while Skyridge’s Madison Sherman also hopes to defend her state title she won at 155 pounds. Cedar Valley’s Alexandra Gates (140) won a state title in 5A last season.
Weight to Watch
At 155 pounds Skyridge’s Madison Sherman could be tested by Hallie Denney from Cedar Valley, who placed second in 5A last year. Sherman did beat Denney in the divisional final. This put Denney on the same side of the bracket as Mountain Ridge’s Naidelyn Lucio, the Divisional A champ, and this possible semifinal match-up could have huge implications in the team race.
Finalist Predictions
100 pounds: Piper Eller (Corner Canyon) vs. Nevi Brady (Cedar Valley)
105 pounds: Brooklyn Eager (Mountain Ridge) vs. Isabella Munton (Cedar Valley)

130 pounds: Telma Rodriguez (Layton) vs. Amelia Roennebeck (Syracuse)
135 pounds: Haley Tibbs (Herriman) vs. Marley Michaelis (Westlake)
140 pounds: London McEntire (Corner Canyon) vs. Alexandra Gates (Cedar Valley)
