Mountain View’s Jaycee Carlson did her best work inside to help her team recover from a double-digit deficit on Tuesday against city rival Timpanogos but her biggest shot came from distance.

The 5-foot-11 senior drilled a 3-pointer with just under a minute to play for a three-point lead and the Bruins held on for a thrilling 48-46 victory to begin Region 8 play.

“I practice that shot all the time,” Carlson said. “I felt confident taking it and they were triple team on Sienna (Bramble), so I was wide open. I just shot it and it went in.”

Carlson and her teammates faced a fired-up Timpanogos squad in the first half.

The game was tied 10 after one quarter but Timpanogos went on a 14-2 run to open the second, taking a 24-12 lead on an Ellie Adams 3-pointer with 3:33 to play. It was 28-16 after Adams made a pair of free throws with 5.8 seconds to play but Bramble hit a 3-pointer to beat the buzzer and cut the deficit to 28-19 at halftime.

Things changed in the second half.

“We were kind of playing a little bit selfish in the first half,” Carlson said. “We wanted to play more as a team, so we started passing and moving the ball and we ran our offense better. I figured that I would have to get points by rebounding, since they were guarding me really tough. Our team really stepped up and we were just grinding on defense.”

Timpanogos had a 32-22 advantage early in the third on a 3-pointer from Maddie Puckett (the T-Wolves only triple in the second half) but the Bruins erupted on a 12-0 run, keyed by three baskets on offensive rebounds from Carlson. Mehani Suguturaga scored on the break to push Mountain View to a 33-32 lead and it was 34-32 entering the final quarter.

The game was tied five times in the fourth quarter. Timpanogos took a 44-42 lead with 1:55 to play on a pair of free throws from MaKayla Boyer but Liv Rasmussen drove in for a score and a 44-44 tie moments later.

Carlson’s 3-pointer with 59 seconds left gave Mountain View a 47-44 advantage. Timpanogos managed to pull within one, 47-46, with 12 seconds remaining on a Boyer layup and caused a turnover to get the ball back with 5.5 seconds on the clock. But Bramble came up with a steal and Rasmussen made 1 of 2 from the line with 2.8 seconds to play for the final margin.

“The biggest thing is we have a lot of different ages,” Bruins head coach Jessica Milgate said. “We have young kids and we have veterans that have been playing for four years at the varsity level. But they battle and they work together. Every single game plan in us going in and saying, ‘Hey, you’ve got to go out and play together, trust each other on offense.’ And then defensively, they get it done because they are communicating and they’re moving together.”

Carlson topped Mountain View (9-4 overall, 1-0 Region 8) with 14 points, 11 in the second half. Saralynn Hair scored 10 and Bramble had eight for the Bruins, who host Summit Academy on Thursday.

Adams led Timpanogos (10-4, 0-1) with 16 points and Boyer added 13 for the T-Wolves, who face Uintah on Friday.

Starting at $4.32/week.
