- Mountain View’s Braxton Ward serves the ball against Timpanogos in a Region 8 boys volleyball match on Thursday, April 2, 2026.
- Lone Peak boys volleyball players celebrate a point during a Region 3 boys volleyball match against Skyridge on Tuesday, March 24, 2026.
Last season, the Wasatch boys volleyball team made a surprising run to the 5A state finals, where the ride came to an end against defending state champion Maple Mountain.
Head coach Mike Wilton was optimistic about the 2026 season and with plenty of good reasons: His top two hitters, 6-foot-7 JJ Serre and 6-4 Chase Billeter, were returning as seniors, as was 6-4 setter Nick Burton.
“I knew with the guys that we had coming back, we had a good chance of being really competitive,” Wilton said. “I watched some video of the guys playing club this summer. I wasn’t their club coach but I was keeping tabs on them and seeing their progress. I started to think, ‘Man, they’re really starting to come together and playing well. This could be a special season for us.'”
Wasatch rolled through the regular season with a 22-1 record, avenging a 3-1 loss to Bingham on March 7 with a 3-1 victory against the 6A Miners last month.
The Wasps have been the state’s most dominant team, losing just six sets in 23 matches.
The No. 1 seed in 5A, Wasatch opens state tournament play in the second round on Wednesday against No. 16 seed Skyline. No. 2 seed Bountiful (25-3) and No. 3 seed Maple Mountain (21-4) are the biggest challengers.
“We’re really looking forward to state,” Billeter said. “It’s going to be so much fun. Last year, we had a hard time. We had a lot of five-set matches that made it really hard to push through. This year, I’m hoping we don’t have to deal with that. Maybe we can get some sweeps going. We want to get the most out of our time at state because for a lot of us, this is our senior season. We want everyone to have a good experience at the state tournament.
“What makes it fun is all the hype and all the rallies and the celebrations that we do. On our team we’ve enjoyed the season so much and played for so long that it’s gotten to a level where it’s collaborative, we’re like one unit that enjoys volleyball.”
The 5A and 6A state tournaments run concurrently at Utah Valley’s UCCU Center on Wednesday and Thursday. The 4A, 3A, and 2A tournaments begin Friday and conclude Saturday.
CLASS 6A
Bingham, the defending state champion, finished 23-2 and is the No. 2 seed. Lehi, behind state kills leader Ashton Shewell, slipped past the Miners to grab the No. 1 seed in the tournament. The Pioneers (22-2) lost only to Wasatch and Lone Peak during the regular season. The Knights pulled several high-level transfers this season and probably have the deepest team in the tournament field. Lone Peak (21-6) is the No. 3 seed and opens the second round against Region 3 foe American Fork Wednesday afternoon.
CLASS 4A
Mountain View (21-5) and its senior-heavy roster earned the No. 1 seed but there are plenty of other contenders, including No. 2 Crimson Cliffs (15-3), No. 3 Desert Hills (21-6) and No. 4 Sky View (23-5). Defending champion Orem finished 11-16 against a difficult schedule and go into the tournament as the No. 7 seed. Timpanogos, which snuck into the 4A finals last season as a No. 7 seed, is No. 8 this season.
CLASS 3A
Ogden (17-6) is the No. 1 seed in the 3A Tournament with No. 2 Morgan (17-11) and No. 3 North Sanpete (16-11) leading the contenders in the quarterfinal round on Friday.
CLASS 2A
While the boys volleyball tournament is just in its third season, this is the first year Class 2A teams have their own championship. Salt Lake Academy (19-9) is the No. Seed with No. 2 American Heritage (15-5), No. 3 Draper APA (13-5) and No. 4 Freedom Prep (17-7) the favorites in the quarterfinal round on Friday.
