6A Baseball: No. 7 Skyridge upsets No. 2 Mountain Ridge 11-9

The magic continued for Skyridge as the No. 7 seeded Falcons defeated No. 2 Mountain Ridge 11-9 to open up the bracket play portion of the 6A state baseball tournament held at BYU’s Larry Miller Field on Monday.

Skyridge barely survived its Super Regional. After losing the first game 5-0 in their best-of-three series vs. No. 10 seed Copper Hills, the Falcons defeated the Grizzlies in two tight one-run games 6-5, 4-3 last Thursday to earn the right to play the Sentinels.

The Falcon faithful were treated to another nailbiter that wasn’t decided until the seventh inning. This is where Miles Robinson stepped up and delivered a 2-RBI triple with two outs that broke a 9-9 tie.

Skyridge head coach Ryan Roberts is glad to have Robinson healthy after a hamstring injury kept him out of the lineup.

“He missed the first half of the season with a hammy but since he’s been back, he’s been a terror,” Roberts said. “He’s one of the best hitters in the state. He’s really tough, he’s battling, he wants to win and he’s been a great leader. It’s been exciting and fun to watch him play these last 15 games because he wants to win and do it with our guys.”

After Robinson’s heroics, it was up to relief pitcher Tate Young to hold down the top of the Mountain Ridge order, one of the most prolific offensive lineups in the state.

Young struck out lead-off hitter Brody Buck on a 3-2 count and then induced lazy fly balls by Ryker Morton and Cooper Goff to secure the Falcon victory.

“Tate did a great job,” Roberts said. “He throws a cutter and it has a little action on it. It slides a bit away from the barrel right there to Cooper Goff, who is one of the best hitters in the state, and got him to pop up. It was pretty cool and I was excited for him.”

Young actually came into the game in the fourth inning. Skyridge’s first two hurlers struggled with control issues as starter Greyson Bauer lasted one inning and Nathan Whitehead pitched two innings before giving way to Young. Mountain Ridge only had six hits the entire game but were the beneficiaries of eight bases on balls and had five others get on base after being hit by the pitch. Young did give up one walk and hit one Sentinel batter but only gave up two runs in his four innings of work.

Young was quick to give his teammates credit for overcoming some early adversity.

“It was a high intensity game and we showed grit,” Young said. “We showed that when our backs are against the wall, we prosper.”

Young felt support from his team even when he gave up a solo home run to Karson Fankhauser that tied the game at 9-9 after six innings.

“It’s good to go back to our dugout with our high energy team. It feels great.”

Skyridge’s offense did its job battling back from 3-1 and 8-6 to deficits as the Falcons had 13 hits including four extra base hits. Two of those came from Robinson. Besides his triple, he smashed a double and reached base in all four of his plate appearances.

Other offensive heroes for the Falcons were Luke Robley, who went 2-for-5 with two RBI while also scoring two runs. Catcher and clean-up hitter Boston Sundberg had a huge game going 2-for-3 with a double and four RBI. Mason Omae contributed a big 2-RBI double in the fifth inning which put Skyridge out in front 9-8, while Brady Buttars went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

“We clutched up and kept answering back offensively,” Roberts said of his team. “That’s been our model. I mean, we know where we’re at and who we are, and if we offensively can do that, we can stay in any game. Our guys really swung the bats well today.”

Corner Canyon 3, Lone Peak 2

No. 3 Lone Peak rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh and got the tying run to second base with one out, but No. 11 Corner Canyon got a pop-up and a strike out to end the game and pull off the upset.

The Knights beat the Chargers three times during Region 3 play this season by a combined score of 27-6 but ran into a hot pitcher in Zach Sorenson, who held Lone Peak scoreless until the seventh.

The Knights (20-8) will play Tuesday morning against No. 2 Mountain Ridge in an elimination game at BYU.

Starting at $4.32/week.
