KAYSVILLE – One girls golf state title is tough enough, but now think about five.
Long rounds, months of preparation and strife – all of it hinging on a two-day weekend. It took a true team effort for Lone Peak to notch its fifth consecutive team title on Tuesday at Davis Park Golf Course, and it came without a single Knight finishing in the top 5.
Senior Saydie Wagner, the defending 6A champion for Lone Peak, bogeyed four times on the back nine, including a double-bogey on the 16th, to finish sixth individually in her final round of high school golf.
Herriman sophomore Paige Anae finished 13 strokes better than Wagner, and five better than runner-up Stratton Durrant of Bingham, for the individual title.
Wagner, signed with UVU for golf, left the weekend with a heavy heart for her teammates, not her own round.
“I’m just happy to be here,” Wagner, overcoming a lingering illness to finish the 36-hole round at 8-over, said on Tuesday.
“At the end of the day, winning with my team, it was super fun… I knew all the girls were going to play well, so I was just counting on me to hit my shots, have fun, enjoy the round but I mean, winning’s not everything – it sure is fun, but can’t win ’em all.”
Wagner is set to rejoin former teammate and Weber State transfer Adley Nelson next fall in Orem.
Yet another senior star is leaving Derek Farr’s outfit at Lone Peak, which has hoisted a championship trophy in five consecutive seasons dating back to 2022.
It’s Wagner’s outpouring of support for all things Lone Peak golf, Farr said, that will make a lasting difference as his program chases a sixth title next spring.
“She did enough,” Farr said. “She’s just a tremendous kid and she had a great year and just came up short, but she always took care of the team and it’s been a lot of fun with her.”
Lone Peak, the best group on the course at 53-over as a team, stuck three more players – sophomore Morgan Thomas (tied 7th with 12-over), freshman Kate Stucki (tied 12th with 16-over), and Mikaila Lieu (14th with 17-over) – in the individual top 25.
Junior Caroline Johnson tied for 26th with 32-over, senior Sophie Cindrich tied for 45th with 42-over, and senior Mikayla Maughn missed the second-day cut.
State weekend, Farr said, is what his girls shape the season around. Region tournaments aren’t merely adjacent, they are only a step toward the ultimate goal.
“It’s kind of fluff, and the only thing we can try and worry about is these two days,” Farr said.
“I think we spent seven days up here for practice rounds… It’s just a matter of not getting caught in saying ‘Well, you don’t have all the girls from last year, you aren’t doing this,’ but just focusing on us and not worrying about that other fluff.”
Historically, Lone Peak, with eight total state titles dating back to 2010, is now second only to Desert Hills with nine total titles earned consecutively from 2010 to 2018.
The American Fork, Skyridge and Westlake teams fit four different players into the top 25 on Tuesday.
Cavemen junior Audrey New shot five strokes better than her Monday card to finish 21st individually at 28-over.
Westlake senior Kya Coon carded a 78 in her second round to finish 29-over and tied for 24th, finishing a stroke better than the Skyridge duo of Chloe Slack and Mallorie Hubbard, who each tied for 24th with 30-over.
Skyridge finished eighth as a team at 137-over, American Fork finished 10th at 142-over, and Westlake didn’t qualify for a team score.
CLASS 5A GIRLS GOLF
Woods Cross claimed the 5A state title at Riverbend Golf Course in Riverton with a total of +55, 10 strokes ahead of second-place Skyline (+65). Springville ended up in sixth place (+140) followed by Wasatch (+151) and Maple Mountain (+156) in seventh and eight, respectively.
The 5A individual medalist was Brighton sophomore Claire Olafsson, who edged out the field at -2. That was one stroke better than teammate Catherine Cook and Tess Poulson of Woods Cross, who both carded a -1.
Navy Hubbs of Salem Hills was the top Utah Valley finisher, ended up in seventh place with +8. Springville’ Lucy Child turned in a +23 in a tie for 13th. Timpview’s Penny Hydrick and Wasatch’s Avery Crawford (+29) tied for 18th.
