When the American Fork girls volleyball team swept Lone Peak in Region 3 play on Tuesday, they really didn’t understand what they had just done.

How could they?

Their knowledge of the rivalry only goes back a few years, but surely they were aware that the Knights have dominated the Utah prep volleyball scene for years, winning 13 state titles since 2003.

Records can be a little fuzzy but AF head coach Melissa Guymon said it’s been 13 years since the Cavemen have beaten their next-door neighbors before Tuesday.

“It was actually October of 2013,” Guymon said. “That was the last time we beat them and prior to that, it was before 2006, which is when the records end on MaxPreps. So I haven’t done any deeper of a dive, but we’ve only beaten them two times since 2006, so 20 years.”

From 2013 to to 2026 is a span of 26 matches, according to Guymon, 26 straight losses to Lone Peak before Tuesday. Not only that, but American Fork hadn’t even won a set against the Knights since 2016.

“There’s been so many teams come through here who’ve never gotten to experience what we did Tuesday,” said Guymon, who took over the program four years ago. “I’m really proud of the team for not only winning that match but for working so hard to take care of each other to become the team that could do something like that. Those freshman who have become seniors, they’re the ones who ended that streak, who’ve changed the story here.”

One of those seniors is Macy Melville, American Fork’s leading hitter who had 12 kills in the upset of Lone Peak.

“It was cool,” Melville said. “I just think our team has worked so hard and I think it’s just what came out of our hard work. I thought we deserved that win and that we played as a team. This team is unlike any other.”

Kind of understated, really.

“They don’t even know how powerful it (the win) is,” Guymon said. “How do you understand it? That’s why I’m so proud. They’re just excellent young women. They treat each other really well. They fight for each other. They fight to be competitors. Four years ago when I got hired, the narrative was not a positive one for our program. I want to take credit, but I can’t. Those seniors have been an example from Day 1. They show up in the gym and they inspire everyone to fight.”

As historic as the victory was against Lone Peak, the season goes on and Thursday, The Cavemen dropped the first set to a fired up Lehi squad.

“I’ve got to give a lot of credit to Lehi, they played amazing in Set 1,” Guymon said. “They have some hitters who can put the ball away and they did.”

American Fork responded by dominating the next three sets, taking home a 3-1 (23-25, 25-15, 25-14, 25-13) victory. The Cavemen turned up the service pressure and knocked the Pioneers off their game, never letting up until the task was done.

“Lehi won the serve and pass the first set,” Guymon said. “They served us off the court and they passed better than we did. So Sets 2, 3 and 4 were a different story. The girls really took ownership of how they showed up in Set 1.”

Three straight aces from Lehi’s Aliyah Shewell pushed her team ahead in the first set and a kill from Kelcee Rasmussen gave the visitors a 25-23 win.

The Cavemen got off to great starts in the next three sets, leading 11-1 in Set 3, 8-3 in Set 3 and 10-4 in Set 4. Melville had three aces to get Set 2 going. An ace from Brynn Murray got AF to set point and a Lehi error finished off a 25-15 victory.

Back-to-back kills from Melville gave the Cavemen a 13-6 lead in Set 3 and she teamed up with Daci Roberts for the winning block in s 25-17 victory.

Set 4 was all American Fork, with a pair of aces from Murray leading to a 5-0 advantage. Freshman Alexis Brant made it 10-4 with a kill and it was 17-6 when Melville scored on an attack. Destinie Hampton tooled a swing off theLehi block to end the match.

“Honestly, we’re all best friends on and off the court,” Melville said. “I just love them all. Growing up on varsity, we’ve not given up on ourselves. It’s been a hard couple of years but we knew coming into this year, we just wanted to come on this court and give it all for our last season, especially myself, Brynn and Destinie, and our seniors.”

American Fork (10-8 overall, 2-1 Region 3) has played a difficult schedule that is starting to pay off with what they hope is a strong finish. The Cavemen take on Skyridge next Wednesday.

Lehi (6-3, 0-2) travels to Skyridge on Tuesday.
