The scoreboard at the University of Utah's Rice-Eccles Stadium promotes Salt Lake City's bid to host another Winter Olympics in 2034 as International Olympic Committee members prepare to tour the stadium and other venues on April 10, 2024, in Salt Lake City.Members of a steering committee that will serve as advisors giving direction to the board for the committee organizing the 2034 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games were announced Wednesday.
The steering committee’s members were selected from various backgrounds, and include athletes along with community, sport and business leaders, plus state and local elected officials.
Steering committee members from Utah County include Carine Clark (Orem), Rep. Jon Hawkins (Pleasant Grove), Sen. Mike McKell (Spanish Fork) and Brad Rencher (Alpine).
A press announcement notes that while the board holds governance and fiduciary responsibility for the organizing committee, the steering committee serves in an advisory capacity.
“The Steering Committee will play a vital role in the years leading up to 2034,” said organizing committee Executive Chair and President Fraser Bullock, in the news release. “It allows us to bring in a broad range of expertise and perspectives across many topics that will be paramount to our success.”
The eight athletes named to the steering committee all have Utah ties. Among them are two-time Olympic champion Ted Ligety, 2022 figure skating gold medalist Nathan Chen, 13-time Paralympic medalist Chris Waddell and 2002 Paralympic cross country champion Tanja Kari.
According to the release, the organizing committee also will impanel various committees intended to provide expertise and knowledge in specified areas. Four-time Olympic speed skater Catherine Raney Norman, who served as board chair for Salt Lake City’s 2034 bid committee, will head the Athletes’ Commission, which will be comprised of Olympic and Paralympic athletes and is tasked with providing guidance to the board to help ensure a positive athlete experience during the Winter Games and build a strong legacy of sport across Utah and the nation.
Norman will name athletes to the commission in the near future, the release states.
The Host Communities Committee will pool leadership from each of the host venue communities. It brings back together Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall (chair) and Park City Mayor Nann Worel (vice chair), who served similar roles during the bid phase, according to Wednesday’s announcement. Members will work to share best practices and to provide advisory counsel to the board.
The Sport and Venues Committee will be stocked with leaders from each of the proposed Games venues, along with Utah and national sport leaders, with Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation President and CEO Colin Hilton serving as chair. This committee will provide a platform for venue and sport leaders to network collectively so all venues are aligned, the release stated.
The Technology and Innovation Committee will bring “expertise and a deep network of contacts to support the organizing committee over the next decade,” according to the release. It will be led by technology leader and Utah native Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare, a global web performance and security company.
Chairs will now begin populating their committees, per the release, which suggested that additional committees are expected to be created over time to address management and board needs.
The organizing committee board and steering committee is scheduled to hold its first meeting on Thursday. Other committees will hold their first meetings after all members have been appointed by the respective chairs.
