California Baptist University smacked out five home runs en route to claiming Sunday’s rubber match over Utah Valley University, 12-2, at Totman Stadium in Riverside, California.

With the victory, the two-time defending WAC champion Lancers (25-12, 11-7 WAC) took two of three in the weekend series over the Wolverines (15-25, 8-13 WAC).

The Wolverines had runners reach in the first and second innings, as Mick Madsen had a two-out single in the first before being stranded, and Copper Hansen reached an error in the second before being left on the bases.

Trailing 1-0 entering the top of the third, the Wolverines got three straight singles with one out. Mitch Moralez went through the left side, Cutchen went up the middle, and Madsen drove home Moralez with a base hit to left field to tie the game up at 1-1. UVU took their only lead of the game on a Cole Jordan bloop single to center to score Cutchen and make it 2-1 in the third.

California Baptist rallied in the bottom of the third and regained the lead on back-to-back home runs from Chad Castillo and Mitchel Simon before Josiah Chavez added a third home run in the inning to give CBU a 5-2 lead.

The Lancers added seven runs in the fifth inning to go up 12-2, with Michael Carpentier and Connor Clift hitting homers in the frame for the Lancers.

Brandon Luna reached base on a two-out single in the seventh inning before Moralez was retired to end the ballgame via the run-rule.

CBU starter Drew Necochea (7-2) picked up the win going 4.0 innings, allowing two runs and giving up five hits. Coop Rust (2-5) took the loss for UVU after throwing 3.0 innings, allowing eight hits. Josh Brown went the final 1.1 innings, allowing just one hit out of the pen for UVU.

Madsen went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead UVU offensively, while Jordan went 1-for-3 with an RBI single. Moralez, Cutchen, and Luna added hits for the Wolverines.

Utah Valley is back in action on Tuesday, April 26 in the UCCU Crosstown Clash against BYU with a 6:00 p.m. MT first pitch from Larry H. Miller Field in Provo. The Wolverines will host WAC West leader Grand Canyon for a three-game weekend series starting Friday, April 29 with a 6:05 p.m. start. UVU and GCU are also scheduled to play Saturday, April 30 at 2:05 p.m. and Sunday, May 1 at 12:05 p.m. at UCCU Ballpark.

Wolverine men’s golf gets fifth at Cougar Classic

Joseph Glenn recorded his third top-15 finish of the season as he tied for seventh at the PING Cougar Classic on Saturday to lead Utah Valley to a tie for fifth on the team leaderboard at Riverside Country Club in Provo.

“It was a solid week for the boys,” said Utah Valley head coach Chris Curran. “We faltered a bit down the stretch today but we gained some confidence this week heading into the WAC Championship next week. Joe played nearly flawless golf the last two rounds.”
