UVU players celebrate a made 3-pointer during the WAC game against Cal Baptist in Riverside, Calif., on Thursday, Feb. 15, 2024.

Drake Allen scored a game-high 19 points and Trevin Dorius pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds to lead Utah Valley to a 69-46 road win over California Baptist on Thursday night at the Fowler Events Center in Riverside, California.

Utah Valley improves to 11-14 overall and 6-8 in WAC play, while California Baptist falls to 14-10 overall and 7-6 in league play. The win marks the first WAC road victory of the season for the Wolverines.

The Wolverines have now held a Division I opponent to under 50 points in back-to-back games for the first time in program history as UVU also held Abilene Christian to just 45 points on Saturday in Orem.

After building a 12-point lead at the half, Utah Valley extended its lead to as many as 29 points in the second half and led by 20 or more points for all but three minutes in the first half.

“I’m really proud of our guys,” said head coach Todd Phillips. “We had a good win on Saturday and kept it going here in Riverside tonight. We had contributions from a lot of guys. I think the biggest thing is that we dominated the paint, outscoring them 46-22, and CBU is one of the best teams in our league in the paint. I was really pleased with how our guys shared and moved the ball and had some guys step up. I thought Drake (Allen) had a great game tonight, getting to the rack and putting pressure on them at the basket. Our team is playing really well right now and that’s the goal is being good at the most important time of the year.”

After both teams traded buckets to start the game, Utah Valley’s Toolson put in a bucket followed by a Toolson steal leading to a Potter dunk in route to six unanswered points to give UVU an 8-2 lead with 16:27 on the clock.

CBU cut it back to just two points, 8-6, with 13:45 to play, but a Stone-Carrawell drive to the basket, an Allen three, and a Nate Tshimanga follow up dunk spared an 11-2 UVU run to give the Wolverines a 19-8 lead with 10:28 to go in the half.

The Wolverines maintained a 10-point 23-13 lead and then used an 8-0 run to extend the lead to 18 points, 31-13, with 6:18 on the clock.

The Lancers responded with a 10-0 run over the next 3:11 to cut the UVU lead to eight points, 31-23, with 3:07 remaining. UVU then held CBU scoreless over the final three minutes to take a 35-23 lead into the break.

In the second half, Utah Valley scored eight unanswered points over the first three minutes of the second half to extend its lead to 20 points, 43-23, with 17 minutes to go.

A Potter jumper in the paint and back-to-back threes from Stone-Carrawell sparked a 15-6 run over the next six minutes to give the Wolverines a 29-point, 62-33, lead with eight minutes remaining in the game. Utah Valley was outscored 13-7 over the final eight minutes but its lead was large enough to secure the victory.

Allen scored his 19 points on a 9 of 14 clip from the field with one shot from long range. He also pulled down five rebounds with three steals, one assist, and a block.

Ethan Potter recorded his third straight double-digit scoring game with 12 points to go along with four rebounds. Potter has scored 12 or more points in four of his last five games.

Caleb Stone-Carrawell came off the bench to score 11 points with three rebounds, three assists, and a block.

Dorius recorded his fourth double-digit rebounding game of the season, pulling down 13 boards on the night. He also had four blocks, marking his fourth straight game with three or more blocks.

Osiris Grady had eight points, while Jaden McClanahan had six and Tanner Toolson helped with five. Trevan Leonhardt had seven rebounds with four assists of the bench.

Utah Valley shot a 45.5% (30-66) clip from the field with a 35.7% (5-14) mark from long range. The Wolverines held CBU to 30.9% (17-55) shooting with just a 17.6% (3-17) clip from 3-point range.

The Wolverines outrebounded CBU 50-31 and outscored the Lancers 46-22 in the paint.

Utah Valley continues WAC road play on Saturday as the team travels to Cedar City to take on in-state foe Southern Utah. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and over the air waves on ESPN 960 AM radio.
