UVU players celebrate a good play during the WAC game against Cal Baptist at Lockhart Arena in Orem, on Thursday, Feb. 15, 2024.

Behind a pair of monster games from Tessa Chaney and Jenna Dick, Utah Valley University knocked off California Baptist, 92-89, in overtime on Thursday night in Lockhart Arena.

Chaney had a career-high 25 points to go along with 14 rebounds while Dick finished with a season-high 26 points to go along with five rebounds, and a career-high seven assists. 92 points is the highest scoring output for UVU since scoring 99 against Utah Tech in February of 2022.

The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Wolverines (9-14, 4-10) and a streak of seven consecutive losses to the Lancers (19-3, 11-2) who entered the week with the 6th-best winning percentage in the country and tied in the loss column with Grand Canyon for the top spot in the WAC standings.

Dick was 8-for-15 overall and made 7-for-12 from three, one make shy of matching the school record. Chaney was 10-for-14 from the field as the Wolverines shot 47.1% overall (32-for-68). Chloe Webb scored 32 points to lead all scorers for CBU, while Filipa Barros added 21, and Anaiyah Tu’ua finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists.

“CBU is so good, and Webb is the best player in the league. She’s so tough,” said UVU head coach Dan Nielson. “We could have given in this week with where we’re at but I’m proud of the fight against a really good team. We’ve had teams go on runs on us and we sort of give in a little bit. We talked this week about staying focused and staying on attack and not just being results-based. We had a good week of practice and we hit some big shots down the stretch.”

Chaney, who had 19 of her points in the second half and overtime, gave the Wolverines a 66-64 lead with 4:57 left before the Lancers went on a 9-0 run to take a 73-66 lead, their biggest lead of the contest. Barros capped the run with a 3-pointer with 2:24 left in regulation.

CBU wouldn’t score again in regulation while Chaney scored seven straight points, including the game-tying bucket with 10 seconds left to force the extra frame. Webb scored the first three points of overtime before Dick tied the game back up with her seventh triple. That sparked an 11-0 run that included a Chaney bucket and consecutive 3-pointers from Kylee Mabry, who scored eight of her nine points in the OT.

The Lancers wouldn’t go away though, Barros hit the first of two overtime 3-pointers and Webb got to the line for two to trim the UVU lead to three, 87-84, with 55 seconds left. Chaney scored on a breakaway on the next possession as the Wolverines beat CBU’s backcourt pressure. Tu’ua scored and, after a Dick free throw, Barros hit another three to make it 90-89 with 15 seconds left.

Mabry sunk two clutch free throws with 13 seconds left to push it to 92-89. Barros had a chance to tie with two seconds left but that was wide and after a held ball had the possession arrow in UVU’s favor, the Wolverines were able to inbound the ball away from the defense and run out the last second to secure the win.

Dick and Cheney combined to score 36 of their 51 points and Webb had 21 of her 32 after halftime. After just one lead change and two ties in the first half, the game finished with 14 lead changes and 15 ties as the teams went back and forth over the final 25 minutes of play.

Dick hit two 3-pointers in the opening quarter to help the Wolverines build an 18-12 lead after one. Halle Nelson opened the second with a steal and layup before Dick buried her third triple of the half to give UVU a 23-12 lead and force a CBU timeout 93 seconds into the second quarter.

The Lancers responded, scoring eight straight during a 13-2 run the tied the game at 25-25. CBU hit a trio of 3-pointers during the run with two coming from Nhug Bosch Duran. The Wolverines stretched it back to six, 31-25, with Chaney scoring four of her six second-quarter points. Webb led CBU on a 9-2 run to close the half, scoring seven of the final nine points to give the Lancers a 34-33 lead at the break. Webb had 11 points at the half to lead all scorers while Dick had nine.

The third quarter went back and forth, with neither team leading by more than three. There were seven ties and seven lead changes in the third quarter alone as the Wolverines won the quarter 21-20 to send the teams into the fourth deadlocked at 54.
