UVU sophomore Britney Moreno talks to a coach at first base during the game against Seton Hall at Farrington Softball Stadium in Tempe on Sunday, Feb. 25, 2024.

Utah Valley dropped their final game at the ASU/GCU Classic, falling to the Seton Hall Pirates 4-2 on Sunday morning at Farrington Softball Stadium in Tempe.

Early inning woes continued to plague the Wolverines (5-9), as the Pirates plated two runs in both the second and third innings, and UVU was unable to put up any runs of its own until the sixth inning.

Avery Sapp got the start in the circle and went 1.1 innings, allowing two runs. She gave way to Halle Morris, who allowed two earned runs over 4.2 innings pitched. Morris gave the Wolverines some quality innings out of the bullpen this weekend, tossing 14 innings in relief and allowing just three earned runs in those innings.

Utah Valley had runners in scoring position in both the second and third, but were unable to convert those opportunities into runs, while Seton Hall was able to plate all four of their runs in those two frames.

The Wolverines hit well with two outs, but were unable to string anything together with none or one out. UVU went 6-for-13 with two outs, but just 2-for-16 with less than two outs.

Utah Valley put together two-out rallies in the fifth and sixth, but only the one in the sixth turned into runs. Morris was hit by a pitch, then doubled home by pinch hitter Mya Higareda. Peyton Hall singled her home on the next at-bat. Libbie Hawker reached on an infield single, but that would be the extent of the rally.

The Pirates’ Kelsey Carr retired the Wolverines in order to finish off her complete game win.

UVU will have a week off before returning to action on March 7 at the Blue Collar Classic, hosted by Boise State. The Wolverines will play four games at the tournament against Kennesaw State, Weber State, and Boise State.

UVU women’s basketball loses at Stephen F. Austin

Utah Valley dropped a Saturday WAC women’s basketball contest at Stephen F. Austin, 84-35. Three games now remain in the regular season with the final road contest coming next Saturday, March 2 at UT Arlington.

The Wolverines (9-17, 4-13) were led by eight points from Kylee Mabry, who returned after missing Thursday’s game due to injury. The Ladyjacks (18-9, 12-4) got a game-high 24 points from Avery VanSickle and 21 points and 10 rebounds from Kurstyn Harden. SFA shot 47.5% from the field for the game, including 11-for-26 (42.3%) from beyond the arc.

The Ladyjacks never trailed and raced out to an 18-6 lead after one quarter of play. SFA closed the first on a 10-0 run and then scored the first five points of the second to take a 23-6 lead just over one minute into the second. UVU trailed 40-18 at the break.

The Wolverines are now tied with Seattle for 10th place, one game behind Tarleton State and two back of Southern Utah and UT Rio Grande Valley in the loss column. UVU has three games remaining as the Wolverines try climb into the top eight and a spot in the WAC Tournament. Stephen F. Austin is firmly in third place in the conference standings.

After next Saturday’s game at UT Arlington, Utah Valley will close out the regular season at home against Tarleton State (March 7) and Abilene Christian (March 9).

Wolverine wrestling can’t quite match Cal Baptist on Senior Night

Utah Valley University wrestling fell on Saturday afternoon to California Baptist University, 20-17. CBU (7-10, 2-6) and UVU (2-7, 1-7) split the dual’s ten matches with bonus points putting the Lancers over the top. No. 14 Evan Bockman and No. 29 Haiden Drury picked up wins for the Wolverines.

“It was a special day as we had eight seniors recognized for their tremendous efforts and contributions as student-athletes to the program and university. It would have been nice to celebrate the last dual of the season and their careers with a win, but we didn’t compete well enough to earn that today. We will now turn our focus toward post-season and getting the starters prepared for hopefully their best performances of the year,” said UVU head coach Greg Williams.

Caleb Uhlenhopp earned his first dual victory of the season with a 2-1 decision at 174 coming from behind trailing 1-0 heading to the third period. He spun the bout in his favor with a reversal that won him the match and picked up a riding time point to put UVU in front 6-3 before the first break.

The dual came down to the day’s final match as Dayne Morton held on for a 7-6 decision over Isaiah Delgado. The UVU senior trailed 3-1 in the second period before scoring on an escape and a penalty point to make it 3-3. After Morton had taken a 7-3 lead early in the third period, Delgado fought back and cut the lead to 7-5 with a reversal before adding a penalty point for the 7-6 loss.

During the second break, UVU honored UVU head coach Greg Williams and awarded him the Michael V. Jacobsen Bronze Wolverine Award for lifetime achievement. Today’s dual was his final home match.

Utah Valley will next compete at the Big 12 Championships on Mar. 9-10 at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Okla. The NCAA will announce allocations for the 2024 NCAA Championships next week. NCAA’s will be Mar. 21-23 at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo.
