Women’s hoops routs La Sierra
Utah Valley University defeated La Sierra University, 97-48, on Tuesday night inside the UCCU Center.
The Wolverines (7-4) had six players score in double figures, led by a season-high 16 points from KJ Carlyle, who added five rebounds and four blocks. UVU forced a program-record 50 turnovers in the contest, including a school-record 39 steals, to overwhelm the visiting Golden Eagles (2-7). Naia Tanuvasa finished with 12 points and a school-record nine steals.
Utah Valley set several personal career highs in the game, with Saige Gibb scoring 14 points and dishing out a career-high five assists in her first start of the season. The UVU bench played a key role, as several players saw their first significant minutes of the season and responded. Anna Shreeve scored 10 points while adding three rebounds and four assists, all career bests, Evie Leeson tallied 12 points, three rebounds and three steals and Orem native Gaby Goo scored five points, with six steals and four rebounds.
“It was good to get everyone some quality time on the court and fun to see some of our younger players shine,” said UVU head coach Dan Nielson. “We have a tough opponent on Saturday, and now that finals are behind us, we can focus on preparing for Idaho State.”
Utah Valley jumped out to a 27-10 first-quarter lead after Tanuvasa scored the first seven points of the game. Carlyle hit back-to-back 3-pointers to put the Wolverines ahead 18-5. The fast start from beyond the arc was evident early, as UVU shot 5-for-10 in the opening frame to build an early advantage. The Wolverines took advantage of 13 steals in the quarter and opened the contest on a 25-5 run.
The Wolverines continued to attack the basket in the second quarter and extended the lead to 38-12 following buckets from Goo and Tessa Chaney, along with a corner 3-pointer from reigning WAC Newcomer of the Week Kaylee Headrick. After a 3-pointer from Gibb, freshman Shreeve made her presence felt with a tip-in layup followed by another layup. A Tanuvasa steal capped the stretch and put the home team ahead by 33. Chaney reached double figures for the ninth time this season with 10 points.
As a team, UVU had six players score in double figures for the first time since last season’s 99-point outing against Seattle U. Four Wolverines starters recorded two steals in the third quarter, with Gibb knocking down a season-high four 3-pointers. The stifling defense limited La Sierra to single-digit shot attempts in the third quarter for the second time in the game. Chaney scored six of her points in the paint during the quarter, while Leeson and Gracie Sorenson added baskets inside.
Leeson played the entire fourth quarter, making four shots and grabbing three offensive rebounds to score eight of her points. Utah Valley finished with 23 offensive rebounds, which led to 23 second-chance points. All 10 players who saw action scored for Utah Valley, marking the second time this season the Wolverines have accomplished the feat.
Utah Valley closes out nonconference play on Saturday, Dec. 20, hosting Idaho State in the Hoop for the Holidays game. The Wolverines will host a doubleheader, with the men’s team facing Bethesda following the game.
