UVU players celebrate after a home run during the WAC game against UT Arlington at the Wolverine Softball Field in Orem on Saturday, March 29, 2025.

Peyton Hall, Bailey Marvin, and Britney Moreno each homered to slug Utah Valley past the UT Arlington Mavericks, 7-5, at the Wolverine Softball Field in Orem and take the three-game series two games to one.

Hall’s longball was a solo shot and Marvin and Moreno’s each brought in two. Megan Gibbs rounded out the scoring with a pair of RBIs herself.

“I was really excited for Brit to hit that home run,” said head coach Cody Thomson. “She’s been working really hard and having some great at bats. This weekend was huge for the Wolverines. We need to get on a roll and this weekend is really going to help us with that. I’m proud of how the team performed and stepped up.”

Avery Sapp picked up her second win of the series with a gritty performance in the circle. Aside from a four-run fifth inning by the Mavs, which was aided in part by an error in the field, Sapp held UTA to one run over the other six frames while striking out five.

The Mavs opened the scoring with a run in the first, but Sapp was able to limit the damage to that with a pair of strikeouts and a nice snag on a line drive comebacker.

Moreno led off the home half of the first with a double, then came in to score after a pair of groundouts by Tatum Hall and Gibbs.

Peyton Hall gave Utah Valley its first lead of the afternoon in the second with a solo home run over the wall in left to make it 2-1.

Marvin and Angelique Mann showed off the leather in the third to get the Wolverines back in the dugout. Marvin turned an unassisted double play on a line drive, then Mann made a Superman-style catch in center to rob UTA’s Dee McClarity.

Marvin pushed the lead up to three with a two-out, two-run shot in the third. Gibbs picked up her second RBI of the day in the fourth with a missile of a double that ate up the left fielder, driving in Angelique Mann to make it 5-1.

UTA tied the game at five in the fifth inning with four runs, three of which came on a home run by Talia Maldonado.

Moreno put the Wolverines up for good with a two-run homer in the sixth. After a one-out single by Mann, Moreno showed bunt, pulled back, and smashed a line drive over the fence in left.

app worked around a leadoff throwing error to keep the Mavs off the board and secure the 7-5 win.

Weather permitting, Utah Valley will make the short trip down University Parkway to take on the BYU Cougars in the final game of the Crosstown Clash series on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. MDT, and the game will be streamed live on ESPN+. Follow @UVUSoftball on social media for updates on potential postponements or time changes.

Wolverine baseball pitching results in series win over Abilene Christian

One day after surrendering 18 runs in a wild 18-14 loss to Abilene Christian, the UVU pitching staff turned things around in the finale of the three-game set at UCCU Ballpark in Orem on Sunday. The Wolverines secured the WAC series win by beating the Wildcats, 7-2.

UVU sophomore pitcher Jacob Heppner was solid on the mound from the start, giving up just two runs on three hits with eight strikeouts in nearly six innings of work.

When Heppner stepped aside, senior Carston Herman was exceptional in relief as he didn’t allow a hit and had four strikeouts in just over three innings of action.

The Wolverine offense was also solid, tallying seven runs on 11 hits.

UVU seized control in the bottom of the second inning when junior Brody Block drove in the first run with a single and then the home team added two more after loading the bases with a hit batter and a walk.

The Wolverines also added insurance runs on a solo homer in the fifth by junior Mason Strong and RBI hits in the sixth and seventh by senior Jayden Smith, junior Jimmy De Anda and junior DJ Massey.

UVU defeated Abilene Christian in the opener, 9-7, on Friday before losing on Saturday. Sunday’s victory improved the Wolverine record on the season to 18-10 overall and 4-2 in conference play.

UVU will take a break from WAC action to host Colorado Mesa at UCCU Ballpark in Orem on Tuesday. First pitch is slated to take place at 2 p.m. MT.

UVU track sets three school records

Jocelyn Phillips made her outdoor debut on Friday and set a new school record while winning the pole vault–one of three school records Utah Valley University set in the lone home meet of the season on Friday.

Alex Hartshorn set a new men’s mile outdoor record and Oakley Olson did the same on the women’s side at the UVU Collegiate Invitational at Hal Wing Track & Field in Orem.

Phillips hit 3.95 meters to win the pole vault, following up an indoor season that saw her set that pole vault record while also winning the WAC Indoor title. Emily Conlin also had a PR and the seventh-best mark in the top 10 with her best mark of 3.60 meters.

Hartshorn’s altitude-adjusted time of 4:02.37, and Olson’s adjusted time of 4:53.36 now both sit atop the record book in the mile. Hartshorn won the men’s mile, finishing just in front of teammate Mo Guled, who was running unattached. Wyatt Mortenson also had a personal record in the mile that entered the record book, with him now ninth with his adjusted time of 4:09.06.

The Wolverines totaled 17 personal records that ruffled the Top-10 record book during Friday’s meet. Also in the mile, Anna Martin (4:54.80) and Natalia Boltz (4:57.11) now hold the No. 2 and No. 3 marks behind Olson following their performances.

Next week, the Wolverines will send distance runners to the Bay Area for meets at Stanford and San Francisco State, with the rest of the team headed to UNLV’s Rebel ELITE in Las Vegas.

Starting at $4.32/week.
