“I thought Addie had a brilliant finish and impacted positively,” Utah Valley head coach Chris Lemay said. “I thought that our goalkeeper, a true freshman (Madeleine Boucher), was out of this world. Sam Curtis gave us big minutes as a central midfielder. True freshman came in and had great composure.”

Curtis helped create the opening goal after battling a Michigan defender for the ball just inside the box in the 33rd minute. The ball deflected high into the air and fell to Olson, who timed it perfectly and fired a shot off the left post and into the back of the net for the 1-0 advantage.

Michigan found the equalizer in the 54th minute after Utah Valley was whistled for a foul just inside the left side of the box. Adi Walick converted the ensuing penalty kick to even the match at 1-1.

Utah Valley continued to battle throughout the second half before being forced to play the final five minutes down a player. Following a Michigan coaches challenge in the 85th minute, Isabella Agrusso was issued a second yellow card and sent off.

Despite playing shorthanded down the stretch, UVU kept Michigan off the scoreboard to secure the draw.

Utah Valley outshot Michigan 14-13 on the night, with each team putting six shots on goal. The Wolverines also held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Lemay said there were plenty of positives in the season opener, especially with several newcomers playing significant roles, but also felt his team left room for improvement.

“At the end of the day, we don’t feel like we played to our best standard over the course of 90 minutes,” Lemay said. “Therefore, we drew, and we feel strongly that had we given our best performance for the full 90, that the result could have gone a little bit better for us.”

Olson led Utah Valley with three shots, including her goal, while Elle Young and Bailey Peterson each recorded two shots.

Boucher made five saves in her collegiate debut to help preserve the draw.

Utah Valley will remain at UCCU Stadium and turn its attention to in-state rival Utah on Monday night. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., with the match broadcast live on ESPN+.

Harmon leaves baseball staff

Utah Valley Director of Hitting Analytics Joey Harmon has accepted a position on the Whitman College baseball staff for the 2027 season. Harmon, who played his final season of eligibility at Utah Valley in 2025, spent the 2026 season on staff as the Wolverines’ director of hitting analytics.

“Joey was part of our championship run in 2025 and joined our coaching staff in 2026,” said UVU head coach Nate Rasmussen. “He is incredibly smart and has a bright future in this game. I’m excited for him to have the opportunity to run his own offense as he continues to grow in the profession, but we’re certainly sad to see him leave.”

Harmon was a member of Utah Valley’s 2025 team that advanced to the NCAA Regional, the Wolverines’ second regional appearance in program history. He made five appearances on the mound, including three outings of 1 1/3 innings. The Pacific University graduate recorded a season-high two strikeouts against UC Riverside in UVU’s opening series of the season. As director of hitting analytics, Harmon helped support the Wolverine offense during the 2026 campaign. Among his contributions was helping Hunter Katschke reach new career highs and set the Utah Valley single-season home run record.

Whitman College is an NCAA Division III institution that competes in the Northwest Conference, the same league in which Harmon played while at Pacific. The Blues finished the 2026 season with a 14-25-1 overall record and an 8-16 mark in conference play.

Amtrup earns spot on Big West preseason team

Utah Valley men’s soccer senior defender Toke Amtrup has been named to the Big West Preseason Coaches’ Team, the league announced in a press release on Wednesday morning.

The Wolverines were picked to finish third in their debut season in The Big West, with reigning regular season co-champions UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine going one and two respectively atop the poll. Following Utah Valley in third, Cal State Fullerton was picked fourth, with CSUN, Cal State Bakersfield, and Sacramento State rounding out the poll.

A native of Svendborg, Denmark, Amtrup is the team’s leading returner in minutes played from 2025 and is the only Wolverine in this year’s squad who started every game last season. Amtrup played all but 77 total minutes in 2025, including the full 90 in each of the last nine games of the season.

Amtrup played a pivotal part in the Wolverines’ historic start to the 2025 season, during which Utah Valley shut out its first six opponents, a program record and a WAC record for any point of a season. Amtrup also scored both of his goals — each game-winners — during that stretch, against Gonzaga and Sacramento State.

As the season gets underway next week, the Wolverines will lean on Amtrup’s experience as he is the lone returner on the back line from last season’s squad. Three of last season’s four departing starters played on the back line, including center back partner Alex Fritcher and wing back Keegan Oyler, who now plays professionally for AC Boise.

Utah Valley opens the regular season against Pacific on Thursday, August 20. Kickoff against the Tigers for the season opener is scheduled for 7 p.m. MT, and tickets can be purchased at GoUVU.com/GetTix.
