The Utah Valley men's soccer team celebrates a 2-1 victory at Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday, October 7, 2026.

FULLERTON, Calif. — Nil Grau had a goal and an assist, Jackson Medina had a career-high seven saves, and Luca Wingaa Laursen scored his first collegiate goal to lead Utah Valley (6-1-2, 2-1 BW) to a 2-1 win over the Cal State Fullerton Titans (4-5-3, 0-2 BW) on Wednesday night at Titan Stadium.

With the victory, the Wolverines move atop the standings in the Big West at the midway point of the conference season, level on six points with reigning conference champions UC Irvine, which picked up a pair of wins since Utah Valley defeated them back on Sept. 30. The Wolverines have just three more conference games remaining, including this Saturday against Sacramento State.

The match had plenty of late-game dramatics, with two goals scored in the final 11 minutes. Fullerton equalized following a lengthy VAR review in the 80th minute, but Grau restored the Wolverine advantage less than five minutes later.

Medina made his first two saves in the 12th and 15th minutes, the first a sliding effort to snuff out a Titan counterattack.

Utah Valley took the lead in the 24th minute as Jose Luis Martin Montealegre broke in from the left flank. His cross went untouched through to the top of the 18 for Grau, who sent a driven ball to Wingaa Laursen on the left side of the six, who steered it in.

The Wolverines kept the pressure on the remainder of the half with a number of close calls. Montealegre and Oliver Watts had shots saved in the 26th and 31st minutes respectively before Grau nearly turned in what could’ve been the goal of the season in the 41st minute, settling a long ball over the top before striking it just wide on the half volley.

The momentum carried into the early stages of the second half, as Utah Valley had a handful of shots blocked in both the 52nd and 58th minutes amid scrambles in the penalty area, but the Titan defense stood tall.

Fullerton capitalized on that momentum gained in the defensive third, pinning the Wolverines back for much of the ensuing 20 minutes or so. Medina was up to the task, making five saves between the 57th and 80th minutes.

The Titans equalized in the 80th minute on a controversial call. The goal came via a corner, although it initially looked like it should have been a goal kick. After the goal was scored by Aiden Bengard, Utah Valley challenged on the basis that the corner shouldn’t have been given in the first place. A lengthy VAR review determined that it should have been a goal kick to begin with, but after further deliberation, the officials determined that it wasn’t a challengeable call and the goal would still stand.

Utah Valley came out strong following the delay, and quickly regained the one-goal advantage in the 85th minute on a gift from the Titan keeper. Grau cut in from the left flank and lifted a trivela cross that went right at the keeper, but the spin from the ball caught him off-guard, skipping off his hands and in.

The Wolverines took control over the final five minutes, maintaining possession in the offensive half and allowing just one off-target shot.

Utah Valley will now return home to host another Big West foe in the Sac State Hornets on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. MDT, and tickets can be purchased at GoUVU.com/GetTix.

Starting at $4.32/week.
