Candace Jacobson is a write-in candidate for Utah County clerk.

On Saturday, a handful of members of the United Utah Party convened on Zoom to endorse Candace Jacobson, a write-in candidate seeking to become the next Utah County Clerk.

Jacobson opted to join the race in September due to her opposition to the two other candidates running for the role. The UUP delegates voted unanimously to support her over Aaron Davidson, the GOP candidate, and Jake Oaks, who is running with the Independent American party.

The meeting was run by Wayne Woodfield, UUP vice chair, and Hillary Stirling, party chair.

“We intend for this to be an extraordinary measure for our party,” Woodfield said. Jacobson is the second candidate endorsed by the United Utah Party after they changed their bylaws in April. The first endorsed candidate was Evan McMullin, seeking the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Mike Lee.

By endorsing Jacobson, Woodfield said the party can put money toward Jacobson’s campaign in terms of billboards or other advertising along with volunteer man-hours.

“We intend for this to be an extraordinary measure for our party,” Woodfield said.

In an effort to keep the quickly organized convention moving forward, Jacobson was given several minutes to share her personal ethos and beliefs with the assembled delegates.

“My whole platform should be ‘It’s not broke, so let’s not fix it,'” she said. “I think the most important thing about public service is that it should be about service, not self-service.”

Jacobson praised the historic political neutrality of the clerk’s office and said, if elected, she would keep in place systems used by Utah County residents — mail-in voting, in particular — and maintain existing systems for marriage licensing. She said maintaining those systems is also the fiscally responsible decision, avoiding purposeful and costly lawsuits.

“We have one of the most popular and effective online marriage license programs in the country,” Jacobson said. When it came to Davidson, she said, “We have a Republican candidate who is anti-vote-by-mail, who has in the past attempted to disrupt a school board meeting and got slapped with a misdemeanor for it.” Jacobson pointed out similar beliefs for Oaks, along with his promise to not give marriage licenses to same-sex couples, if elected.

With Election Day less than one month away, on Nov. 8, Jacobson will continue striving for office, leaving the meeting with a note that she was about to go pick up yard signs to distribute.

Before signing off, the delegates left notes of support.

“I missed the public comment period but just want to express deep appreciation to Candace for stepping up and running so that we have a non-crazy choice in this race. Thanks Candace!” wrote Alan Wessman, UUP candidate for the Utah House of Representatives.

Starting at $4.32/week.
