BYU recruiting roundup: Cougars commit two to their 2026 signing class

BYU head coach Kalani Sitake applauds a good play during the Big12 game against Arizona at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2024.

It’s June, which means BYU football recruiting takes center stage with many prospects making their way to Provo for camps, meetings with coaches and to otherwise experience all the Cougar program has to offer.

The top prospect making his way to Provo recently is 5-star quarterback prospect, Ryder Lyons, who is expected to announced his commitment decision shortly. BYU is thought to be a top final contender for the 6-foot-2, 220 pound prospect from Folsom, California, along with USC and Oregon.

Lyons is ranked the No. 4 quarterback recruit nationally by the 247 Sports Network for the 2026 signing class and as the No. 13 overall prospect. Lyons is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and has an older brother, Walker Lyons, who currently plays tight end for USC.

While BYU anxiously awaits Lyons’ commitment decision, it’s working arduously to fill up other needs within the program and recently secured the commitments of two intriguing prospects for next year’s class over the weekend.

The first commitment came from Antonio Johnson, a 6-foot-4 defensive back prospect from Fort Worth, Texas. Johnson didn’t claim all that impressive of an offer sheet, but is thought to be a good fit within BYU Defensive Coordinator Jay Hill’s defensive system.

It’s no secret that the current Cougar defensive coaching staff relishes long and athletic defensive backs, and Johnson certainly fits that bill. Consider the height of defensive backs recruited by Hill since he arrived at BYU in 2023, which includes Faletau Satuala (6-foot-4), Therrian Alexander (6-3), Matthias Leach (6-3) and Tommy Prassas (6-2) and it goes to reason why Johnson received his offer.

According to Johnson, the Cougars officially offered him while he was in class, to which he immediately accepted the offer before traveling to take in all BYU had to offer. When Johnson did finally make it out to Provo, however, it confirmed his commitment.

“Now that I’ve been down there in Provo, and seen everything, it’s my home. That’s where I want to be,” Johnson said during an interview conducted on Cougar Sports with Ben Criddle on ESPN The Fan.

Johnson’s visit to BYU involved several activities on top of several meetings with coaches which included being introduced for the first time to Cougar Head Coach Kalani Sitake. He also was able to make connections with several players already on BYU’s football roster including both Matthias Leach and Jonathan Kabeya, both of whom are from the Dallas-Forth Worth area.

“Those are two Dallas boys that I knew I could hang around and be with,” Johnson said.

Johnson plans on graduating from high school early in order to join the Cougar program in January and participate in spring practices at the safety position.

The Cougars also secured the commitment of tight end prospect Parker Ord, who claimed offers from Utah, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma State and Arizona, among several others before opting to pledge to BYU. Ord is a 6-foot-4, 210 3-star prospect from Frisco, Texas who plans to serve a two year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints prior to enrolling at BYU.

Ord’s commitment comes in conjunction with that of 4-star tight end prospect Brock Harris, who committed to sign with the Cougars back in April. Harris is a 6-foot-6, 238 pound prospect from St. George who claimed a bevy of offers from top programs such as Alabama, Utah, Arizona State, Michigan, Georgia and a host of others from around the country.

Harris is rated as BYU’s top 2026 recruit to date by 247 Sports followed closely by Lone Peak High School offensive lineman Bott Mulitalo, who committed to the Cougars a few weeks following Harris’ pledge. Overall BYU has 11 commitments for 2026, which includes local prospects Kaneal Sweetwyne (QB Skyridge HS), Legend Glasker (Athlete, Lehi HS) and PJ Tatitaki (defensive end, Lehi.)
