BYU senior Cole Ponich watches his shot during the Utah State Amateur Championship at Ogden Golf and Country Club in Ogden on Friday, July 12, 2024.The No. 19 ranked BYU men’s golf team finished in 12th place after 54 holes (289-300-289-878) and made the cut at the NCAA Championship at Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, Calif.
On Monday, however, the Cougars saw their season come to an end as they couldn’t rally and make the match play rounds.
BYU ended up tied for 13th overall with Vanderbilt, shooting 4-over-par as a team. Since only the top eight teams reached match play, the Cougars were a few too many strokes off the pace.
BYU was paced by Cole Ponich, who finished four rounds at 7-over-par.
The next four Cougars weren’t far behind as Tyson Shelley came in at 10-over-par, Zac Jones was 12-over-par, Peter Kim was one shot back at 13-under-par and Simon Kwon was at 14-under-par.
Although the final round concluded after the Daily Herald’s press deadline, two Big 12 teams (Arizona State and Oklahoma State) were in position to make match play. Texas Tech finished four strokes in front of BYU.
