Learn about Utah’s wild turkeys at the Hardware Wildlife Education Center

By Staff | Oct 29, 2025

You can learn about wild turkeys in Utah — and maybe even see some yourself — by visiting the Hardware Wildlife Education Center in November.

HYRUM — As fall settles across northern Utah and the leaves in Blacksmith Fork Canyon turn golden and red, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is inviting visitors to head up the canyon and learn about one of Utah’s most fascinating — and often overlooked — wild residents: the wild turkey.

The DWR’s Hardware Wildlife Education Center, located at the Hardware Wildlife Management Area about 15 miles east of Hyrum, will host its annual Turkey Tales exhibit this November. The free, family-friendly event offers visitors a chance to learn about turkey biology, explore interactive displays, and even catch a glimpse of real wild turkeys roaming the nearby hillsides.

The exhibit will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on three consecutive weekends in November:

  • Nov. 7-9
  • Nov. 14-16
  • Nov. 21-23

“We can’t guarantee you’ll see wild turkeys, but there’s a decent chance you will,” said Marni Lee, director of the Hardware Wildlife Education Center. “Dozens and dozens of wild turkeys live on the wildlife management area, and fall and winter are two of the best times to see them.”

In addition to the educational displays inside the center, families can enjoy a variety of hands-on activities. Children can participate in a free craft project, and story times will take place each hour throughout the day. A short walking path near the center will also be transformed into an educational story walk, with enlarged book pages and fun animal-themed activities along the trail.

“Many Utahns aren’t aware that wild turkeys live in Utah,” Lee said. “The exhibit provides fun facts about the birds and lots of information about wild turkey biology.”

The Hardware Wildlife Education Center is known for its seasonal events, including elk viewing and winter sleigh rides, but the Turkey Tales exhibit has become a popular autumn tradition. Visitors can enjoy the crisp mountain air and spectacular canyon scenery as they make their way up State Route 101, where colorful leaves, wildlife, and the sounds of the Blacksmith Fork River make for a perfect fall outing.

And if you’re hoping to spot wild turkeys before you even arrive, keep your eyes peeled — the birds are often seen foraging along the roadside and in open meadows throughout the canyon. Fall fishing in the river is another great reason to make the trip.

The Hardware Wildlife Education Center provides a unique opportunity for Utah families to connect with nature and learn about the wildlife that calls the state home. Whether you’re a lifelong outdoors enthusiast or simply looking for a fun and educational weekend activity, the Turkey Tales exhibit offers a little something for everyone.
