Utah Valley's Angelique Mann takes a pitch during the Wolverine's 4-3 win over BYU on Tuesday. April 7, 2026Payge Armendariz tossed a complete game and Angelique Mann drove in two to lead Utah Valley to a 4-3 win over the BYU Cougars at Gail Miller Field on Tuesday night.
Armendariz threw her first complete game of the year, holding the Cougars to just two extra-base hits on the night while rolling a pair of timely double plays to get out of jams during the middle innings.
“I’m so proud of Payge, she’s had to go through some mechanical changes, and for her to make those adjustments and have this victory, against such a good team, is just phenomenal,” said head coach Cody Thomson. “The team performance was great, we just did what it took to win.”
With the victory, the Wolverines have now beaten the Cougars in three-straight seasons for the first time in program history. It also marks the first time UVU has won back-to-back games in Provo.
Utah Valley jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after one, but threatened for much more. Mann got the scoring started with a one-out, bases-loaded single to right, but the Cougars were able to hold the line there.
The Wolverines got the rest of their scoring in the third with a little help from the BYU defense. After Amber Rodriguez led off the inning with a four-pitch walk, Tatum Hall hit a sinking liner to center that got down and was booted by the center fielder, allowing Hall to advance to third and Rodriguez to score easily.
After a pitching change, Bailey Marvin drew a four-pitch walk to put runners at the corners for Mann, who hit a slow chopper between third and short that allowed Hall to score. Marvin took third on a wild pitch, then Megan Sterzer drove her home on a sac fly to deep right.
BYU got its first run of the evening in the home half of the third on a sacrifice fly to right. Sterzer put the throw right on the money to Maddie McSorley at home, but the Cougars’ Miranda Mansfield was able to evade the tag and slide in safely.
The Cougars made it 4-2 on their first extra-base hit of the night in the fifth inning as Hailey Shuler doubled to left center. Ry Binne made a leaping grab on a line drive to third to end the inning.
BYU got the tying run 60 feet away from scoring in the bottom of the seventh as Lily Owens hit a triple just over the glove of Mann in center, cutting the deficit to one. Armendariz was able to get a groundout to short and a flyout to left to retire the side.
Utah Valley will resume WAC play this weekend in Abilene, Texas, as the Wolverines face off with the Abilene Christian Wildcats. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 1 p.m. MDT, with the series finale on Saturday at 11.
