The final score doesn’t always reflect the overall play put forth by both teams in the game of soccer, and that was certainly the case in Timpanogos’ 3-2 double overtime win over Lehi on Monday.
Despite controlling possession throughout, the Timberwolves found the back of the net just three times despite putting at least 20 shots on frame. At least according to Timpanogos coach Chuy Acevedo, who expressed mixed emotions regarding his team’s win over the Pioneers after.
“It’s stressful seeing so many scoring opportunities and only getting three goals,” he said. “But we got the win, and the fact that we created all those opportunities is certainly something we’ve been working toward. This year we’re working really hard knowing a really good offense is actually a better defense than having a good defense.”
It’s all about possession, and by increasing possession it subsequently lessens an opposing team’s offensive opportunities. And on Monday it worked well, for the most part, with Timpanogos standout and Air Force signee Lewis Peterson leading the charge, much like he has in most games played this season.
Peterson led off the scoring for the Timberwolves in the game’s 17th minute before finding his way past the Pioneer defense late in the first half to force a penalty inside the penalty box to subsequently receive a PK opportunity. The senior calmly found the back of the net on his penalty kick to vault his team to a 2-0 lead at the half.
“I’ve put in a lot of work, but all the goals are because of my teammates and the work they’ve put in,” Peterson said. “We’re one team and we all work for each other, and every goal I get is because of my teammates and their work in setting those opportunities up for me. I love my teammates.”
Timpanogos appeared to be on cruise control up until the Pioneers scored a goal with just over 11 minutes remaining and then followed it up with their own PK to tie things at 2-2 with 7:32 left on the clock.
The teams battled back and forth during two overtime periods before Cooper Michaelis finally notched a goal with just over six minutes left in the second overtime period.
“It was huge for us to get that because these boys are hungry and we want to be successful,” Acevedo said. “We’re hungry to win region and keep improving, and part of that is coming out on top of games like this.”
“It was unbelievable seeing that goal go in and I sort of just wanted to lay down and take a nap after working so hard all game,” Peterson added. “We’re a selfless team and players make a lot of runs without getting touches, but we keep going, and we kept going in this game and finally got a goal there at the end.”
As for Peterson, he’s the main driver of all of it and the player the entire team looks to as their leader.
“He’s a center-back, but he still manages to get all those scoring opportunities, which is crazy, but it shows just how good of a player he is,” Acevedo said. “He’s one of our captains, and when he’s out it really shows. Off the field he’s leading all of it and setting a great example for everyone. He’s been phenomenal for us.”
Peterson leads a senior-heavy team that only lost two starters from a season ago with the Timberwolves aiming to replicate a lot of the success the girls team at Timpanogos has forged over the years.
“The players really came together in the offseason, which was great to see,” Acevedo said. “They all played club together leading up to this season and the unity they have and the hunger they all share is great to see. Hopefully we can make a good run, win region and we’re encouraged by the play so far this year.”
With the win Timpanogos improves to 4-1 on the early season and will next take on American Heritage.
