After taking two straight losses on the early season, the Lone Peak girls lacrosse team rebounded in a big way with a 19-7 win over American Fork on Tuesday.
The Knights blitzed the Cavemen out of gate, scoring goals in rapid succession in building a commanding 15-2 lead at the half. They did as much by dominating possession and then deftly capitalizing on scoring opportunities, proving both patient and aggressive, according to what specific situations dictated.
As could well be imagined, most of what transpired during the game’s first 24 minutes was approved of by Lone Peak coach Weslie Lundell.
“We’ve been putting in a lot of work to solidify our plays during different situations, and we were able to utilize that practice today,” she said. “We were able to see what was working, which players were working well together, and the goal now is to continue to do that during our games coming up and throughout the season.”
It was a welcome sight after taking two tough losses to both Mountain Ridge and Davis by minimal margins. Keying the Knight attack throughout was senior Norah Lisonbee, who is one of the team’s senior leaders and has worked to recruit several of the team’s top players to the team, as well.

Growing the sport of lacrosse, while working to reel in good and willing talent is an ongoing process for a sport that was formally introduced to Utah preps in 2020, but that growth is well underway and thriving at Lone Peak.
“We’ve added about 20 athletes to this sport this year, and they are phenomenal,” Lundell said. “The leaders are really leading the younger girls while those younger girls are putting in the work. So overall it’s been a really good work ethic in practice that we’ve developed.”
Lundell has been at Lone Peak since it was introduced as an officially-sanctioned UHSAA sport and has been creative and effective in her efforts to enhance interest.
“We’ve been going to the elementary schools, the junior highs to teach lacrosse, and we’ve actually doubled our youth program this year,” she said. “So it’s been really awesome and our selling point is that it’s a sport any athlete can play. We have girls that in choir, band and stage crew, and all types. It’s a sport that requires all kinds of skill, and so we try and get girls with a great analytical mindset that can pick it up quickly.”
As for Lone Peak’s team this year, as Lundell mentioned, it’s a good mix between good leaders and willing up-and-comers.

“Our leaders are definitely Norah Lisonbee and Lucy McMurray, but then we have a lot of girls that can fill in those spots,” Lundell assessed. “It’s been a really good combination and we’re excited for this season and certainly for the future here at Lone Peak.”
With the win Lone Peak improves to 4-2 on the season and will next take on rival Skyridge, a game which always has the full attention from both the players and coaches. As for the season goal, it’s all about taking it to the highest level.
“Our goals as players and coaches are aligned and that’s to take state,” Lundell said. “That’s our goal every year and that’s what we’re working toward.”
