All Wells Fargo ATMs now have a cardless option on their home screens.

Don’t have your wallet when you need cash?

At some Utah County banks, that’s no problem.

Responding to new trends in mobile banking, Wells Fargo is the one of the first consumer banks to take the plastic card out of automated teller machine transactions. Wells Fargo bank customers now only need their smartphone and their personal identification number to score some cash.

“It’s exciting technology. Chances are customers who approach an ATM will have a mobile device with them,” said Lisa Ivers, Spanish Fork Wells Fargo branch manager, in a recent phone interview.

To use the service, customers obtain a one-time code through the Wells Fargo phone app or via a browser. After the code is generated and sent to the user, he or she has 30 minutes to use the code, along with his or her PIN, to do a transaction at any one of the bank’s 13,000 ATMs across the country.

The code is only good for one location and once used will not work again. That is a security measure for the customer, Ivers explained.

Before the process opened up to customers, Ivers tried out the service herself. She was impressed.

“It’s amazing — it’s so fast and convenient. The entire transaction, from getting my access code to finish, was really, really fast,” Ivers said. “It’s an amazing convenient way for customers to have access to their funds and manage their money.”

Ivers explained the cardless ATM service was in response to banking customers’ feedback on how they want to bank. The service is available on all current Wells Fargo ATMs for current Wells Fargo customers.

Starting at $4.32/week.
