Orem Macy’s not on newly released list of confirmed store closures

By Kurt Hanson daily Herald - | Jan 4, 2017

Macy’s Inc. announced Wednesday the closure of 68 stores across the nation in an attempt to “streamline its store portfolio, intensify cost efficiency efforts and execute its real estate strategy,” according to a press release from the company.

Of the 68 store closures announced, two were in Utah, one being at the Layton Hills Mall and one in the Cottonwood Mall in Salt Lake City. Both will close early in 2017.

More than 10,000 jobs will be cut in the nationwide closures.

The location at University Place in Orem was not on the list. However, in August, Macy’s announced the closure of 100 stores. Whether it’s on the list of 30-plus additional stores that may be closed over the next few years due to lease expiration remains unclear.

A new location at the Fashion Place mall in Murray is scheduled to open in spring 2017.

Over the next two years, the company plans to open about 50 Macy’s Backstage locations, all of which will be inside existing Macy’s stores, and about 50 Bluemercury beauty specialty stores, which will be both freestanding and inside existing Macy’s stores.

Starting at $4.32/week.
