It’s not a surprise that Vineyard is growing. On Tuesday, it grew a little bigger when Utah Community Credit Union opened its first branch in the city.

“As a company born in Utah County, we’re excited to add another branch close to home here in Vineyard. This city is growing at an exponential rate, and we want to help those who live here — and those who soon will — to experience financial freedom, security and prosperity with help from UCCU,” said Bret VanAusdal, UCCU president and CEO.

Originally known as the BYU Employee Federal Credit Union, it opened in 1956 on the Brigham Young University campus as a nonprofit financial institution owned by its members.

Employees, students and family members could join at the time. It was located in the basement of the Earnest L. Wilkinson Center, by the bowling alley and post office.

In 1977, the credit union moved off campus and changed its name to Universal Campus Credit Union.

UCCU also formed an agreement with Utah Valley University for its own faculty, staff and students to be able to join the credit union.

In the years since, it has grown to more than 20 branches from Draper and Herriman to Midway and cities throughout Utah County. That now includes Vineyard.

“We designed our Vineyard branch with the people of Vineyard in mind, doing our best to match the community’s future-focused energy and attitude,” said Alan Bushman, Vineyard branch manager.

“The residents can use our live video teller machines that connect them with a teller via video chat, while also keeping that local branch experience members have come to love from UCCU,” Bushman added.

As of 2020, UCCU had assets of $1.7 billion.
