We always love the opportunity to get behind the wheel of a new hybrid, especially when it comes from Toyota, the brand that has arguably pioneered hybrid technology into what it is today.

This past week, we had the chance to test out the new 2025 version of the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid, a compact crossover that promised efficiency without sacrificing daily driving practicality. With our typical busy schedules, we were eager to see how the Corolla Cross HV handled our everyday driving demands in and around Utah Valley.

First impressions: Compact, yet capable

The Corolla Cross Hybrid slots right into Toyota’s lineup between the standard Corolla sedan and the larger RAV4. At first glance, it was clear that Toyota had crafted a design that was both sleek and rugged.

Our test vehicle came in a stunning Soul Red Crystal exterior, complemented by a black roof and sharp LED headlights. The look was very sporty and modern — perfect for those who want a stylish yet functional daily driver, and we thought it was one of the best-looking red colors to come from Toyota in a long time!

Inside, the cabin proved to be overtly spacious, especially for a compact crossover. The dual-colored fabric seats provided great support during longer drives, and the 8-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia touch screen kept us connected with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The technology package was intuitive, with clear graphics and quick responses. Storage compartments were plentiful, with convenient cubbies for small items and a deep center console bin for added practicality.

Efficiency that impressed

The biggest highlight of our week with the Corolla Cross HV was its fuel economy. Over 400 miles of mixed driving — including commuting, errands and a scenic weekend jaunt around Utah Lake — we averaged an impressive 44 miles per gallon, and we would have expected nothing less from Toyota’s leadership.

The hybrid system seamlessly switched between the gasoline engine and electric motor, making the most out of every drop of fuel. Even in stop-and-go traffic around Orem and Provo, the hybrid powertrain performed great.

We also noted that even during extended highway drives, the Corolla Cross HV maintained its efficiency without needing excessive throttle input. The regenerative braking system helped recover energy.

Driving experience: Smooth and confident

Around town, the Corolla Cross Hybrid proved its worth, with its nimble handling and composed ride quality. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder hybrid engine delivered 196 horsepower, which felt more than adequate for city driving and highway cruising alike. Merging onto Interstate 15 was effortless, and we appreciated the smooth power delivery from the electronic continuously variable transmission (eCVT).

The ride was quiet, thanks to Toyota’s sound-dampening efforts, and the suspension absorbs bumps well — even on less-than-perfect roads. Taking the Corolla Cross HV around Utah Lake, we found the hybrid system provided ample power for any inclines while maintaining impressive efficiency. The available all-wheel-drive system gave us confidence on the winding roads, making this a solid choice for Utah drivers who experience all four seasons.

Steering felt well-weighted, with good feedback on curvier sections of road, making it enjoyable to drive despite its primary focus on efficiency. During a light snowstorm, the AWD system automatically adjusted traction, keeping the drive stable and surefooted — a reassuring feature for wintertime conditions in Utah.

Practicality for everyday life

Throughout the week, we put the Corolla Cross Hybrid through the paces of our normal daily life — grocery runs, to work and back, and drives around the valley. The 21.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row was more than sufficient for our needs. And with the 60/40 split-folding rear seats, there’s plenty of room for larger items.

When we had passengers in the rear seats, they were pleasantly surprised by the amount of legroom, making this an excellent choice for small families or empty nesters like us. The climate control was easy to use and kept everyone comfortable, and the available heated seats were a nice touch on chilly mornings.

Toyota had also paid attention to the small details, like having ample cup holders, door storage bins, and a well-placed armrest that made longer rides more comfortable. For those needing extra space, the available roof rails allow for additional cargo-carrying capability, perfect for outdoors enthusiasts.

Technology and safety: A high-tech companion

Toyota packed the Corolla Cross with a host of tech features designed to make driving safer and more convenient. The standard Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite included adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning with steering assist, and a precollision system with pedestrian detection. We found the adaptive cruise control particularly helpful during a long stretch of freeway driving, effortlessly maintaining distance from other vehicles.

Other thoughtful features included a wireless charging pad, multiple USB-C ports for charging devices, and a crisp 10-speaker JBL premium audio system for those who appreciate great sound quality on the go. The optional panoramic moonroof gave the cabin an open and airy feel, making every drive a little more enjoyable.

At the end of the week: A winning combination

After a full week with the 2025 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid, we came away impressed with its blend of efficiency, practicality and modern features. With an EPA-estimated 45 mpg city/38 mpg highway, it would be an economical choice for anyone looking to cut down on fuel costs without switching to a fully electric vehicle.

Toyota has once again proven that hybrids can be both fun and functional. Whether you’re commuting through Utah Valley, heading up the canyon for a weekend adventure or simply running errands, the Corolla Cross HV is a well-rounded crossover that delivered on its promises. With its comfortable ride, spacious interior and outstanding fuel economy, it’s easy to see why this hybrid would be a favorite among Utah drivers.
