Aim for huge: Iggy’s Sports Grill scores big with food, atmosphere

By Jessica Eyre - Daily Herald - | Dec 1, 2005

Some people may live by the expression “less is more.”

But to Iggy’s Sports Grill, it’s doubtful that idea has even been offered.

Walking into the restaurant in Sandy, it’s hard to tell which was more noticeable: the enormous, open space with beautiful exposed beams, every surface covered with indoor plants and Christmas poinsettias; or the biggest screen I have ever seen outside a movie theater.

Then, walking to our table, we realized the screen was part of a block of multiple screens for viewing on each side of the restaurant. It truly is a sports fan’s dining Mecca.

And the “big” about Iggy’s doesn’t stop with the TVs.

The menu features typical sports grill fare such as burgers and steaks, pizza and sandwiches, and a wide variety of appetizers.

We started off with Spinach Dip, which came in a ceramic crock surrounded by homemade flour tortilla chips. The dip arrived with a thick layer of fontina cheese, crispy on the outside, ooey-gooey on the inside.

A complimentary loaf of herb bread came with Chili Water, a dipping sauce made with chili flakes, sugar and rice wine vinegar. We could have put the sauce on everything. It was sweet and tangy with just enough bite to keep us coming back for more.

All the burgers are a “hefty half pound.” The Western comes with cheddar cheese, bacon and barbecue sauce, plus lettuce, fresh onion and onion straws. All we can really say is “beefy.” The huge burger oozed tangy barbecue sauce and the onion rings piled high on the side were a sight to see. And the patty was so full of flavor it was almost overwhelming.

We thought maybe the chicken strips would be a little less food to take on. But when we set our eyes on the plate set before us, that thought immediately left.

The four battered strips of white meat may have even beat the burger on a scale. Thick and juicy, the chicken was snuggly surrounded by a dark, crispy shell. And with honey mustard and ranch for dipping, Iggy’s scored more points with us.

The Chicken Cordon Bleu sandwich had a breaded chicken breast with Swiss cheese and a slice of Canadian bacon with a creamy Dijon sauce, plus lettuce and tomato.

The chicken had more of a flaky breading than the strips, and the sandwich overall had a good amount of black pepper. The fries had a crispy coating as well and, again, were in good supply alongside the sandwich.

Iggy’s also sports a large variety of pasta, seafood and even enchiladas, with salads in half and whole sizes.

The Cobb Salad comes with the traditional toppings of bacon, egg, avocado, bleu cheese crumbles, olives, tomato and cheese. Iggy’s also has grilled chicken and pepperjack cheese.

And even the half salad has plenty to feed a hungry appetite. Mounds of fresh cubes of avocado and plenty of bleu cheese, with all the other ingredients, completely cover the bed of lettuce it rests on and there are plenty of choices for dressings.

The atmosphere was fun. As we ate, we watched the Jazz play on the television. And while the sound was off before the game started, it was great to hear the play-by-play of our favorite team. Someone just needs to invent a way to turn off the sound of the commercials.

Next time we’ll bring more friends and try the Iggy’s Tin Lid appetizer we saw on the way out: literally a tin lid of jumbo coconut shrimp, hot wings, Southwest egg rolls, chicken balls, onion straws and onion rings. And with the bowl season coming up, Iggy’s should be just the place.
