"Schmigadoon: Schmicago" premieres on AppleTV+ on Friday, April 7, 2023.The second season of the hit Apple TV+ show “Schmigadoon” begins where the first season ended. This season is a bit darker than the first but just as musical with our familiar faces playing new characters out of Schmigadoon and in the town of Schmicago.
Josh and Melissa (Keegan-Michael Key and Cecily Strong) are living their lives to the fullest now that they are back from their adventure in Schmigadoon. They are happy and in love, but unable to conceive a child. Weighed down by sadness, they decide to go back to Schmigadoon, but end up in Schmicago.
They encounter the same faces they knew from season one, but they are completely different people. These people welcome the newcomers who are taken aback by the new town. It is not as colorful as Schmigadoon and they find themselves smack dab in the middle of the dark musicals. Combining “Chicago” and “Sweeney Todd” with shades of “A Chorus Line,” “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” “Hair” and other popular musicals from the 1960s and 1970s, Schmicago’s residents are all-singing, all-dancing and — eventually — Melissa joins in.
They desperately want to leave Schmicago, but are unable to do so. The singing narrator (Tituss Burgess) gives them hints on how to leave, but they’re still stuck. What is expected of our protagonists?
Among the returning cast are Dove Cameron, Alan Cumming, Kristin Chenoweth, Jane Krakowski, Jaime Camil, Aaron Tveit, Ann Harada and Martin Short. Joining the cast this season is Patrick Page as Octavius Kratt. While their names might be the same as Schmigadoon, their characters are very, very different. How will this couple find their escape from the darker Schmicago?
Once again, this show delivers on music and enjoyment with a tremendously talented cast. The six-episode series debuts April 7 on AppleTV+ with the first two episodes. The remaining four episodes will roll out, one per week, through May 5.
