Taken from the characters in the Inspector Lynley series of novels by Elizabeth George, “The Inspector Lynley Mysteries” (2001-2007) is a 23-episode crime drama that originally aired on the BBC. All six seasons — or “series” as they are called in Britain — are available to stream now on BritBox.

Gone is the age of waiting days, weeks and months on bated breath after cliffhangers. Viewers can now continue the story immediately in consecutive nights or nearly consecutive viewings.

The show focuses on Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley (Nathanial Parker). He is Oxford-educated and the 8th Earl of Asherton. He has a strong family history and an impressive background, which doesn’t bode well for his new partner, Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers (Sharon Small).

She is from a working-class background and has the reputation of being difficult to work with. But she is a dedicated police officer and willing to put up with anything to get the job done — even an Earl. Lynley is completely dedicated to his job, though, and rarely brings up his high class and family status.

As the show progresses, the two unlikely partners turn into a smart, well-matched pair. They compliment each other and become highly regarded within the department — although, at times, Havers manages to get herself into trouble with her big mouth and Lynley manages to get on the wrong side of his superiors.

The personal lives of the two come into play, but most of the episodes focus on how they solve the crimes, even while being tormented by private demons. Continuing to showcase their different lives, Havers lives with her parents, and eventually a small apartment, while Lynley lives in a more comfortable abode.

When they visit his ancestral home, the trappings of his title and history cannot be overlooked. But at the heart of Thomas Lynley is his true desire to solve crimes and seek justice.

Watching this entire series is a fun experience and viewers get to see the growth of the wonderful partnership.
