Brokaw: Eugene Levy at his best as ‘The Reluctant Traveler’

"The Reluctant Traveler" is streaming now on Apple TV+.“It’s not that I hated traveling. I just didn’t love traveling,” Eugene Levy told reporters. “I never loved traveling. I don’t love the airport experience. I’m not a fan of sightseeing generally.”
So what is he doing fronting a new series about traveling the world? In “The Reluctant Traveler,” Levy is taking viewers around the world as the charming curmudgeon we’ve come to know and love.
“We kind of discussed the locations where we’re going and we whittled it down from a larger list of locations. And initially at the very beginning of this series, I would say, ‘Well, I don’t particularly want to go there. I don’t think that would be too much fun. I think the weather is kind of terrible in this location.’ I mean I was actually truly reluctant in the very beginning, like until I realized that the show itself, the show, is about the reluctancy,” he said.
And Levy was definitely reluctant even though the production was a relatively low-stress affair. They only filmed a few episodes “every couple of months.” As a matter of fact, he was not only reluctant to travel, but reluctant to even take the job.
“I’m not curious by nature,” the actor explained. “I’m not proud of any of this but it’s just a fact. So, I always thought I was the wrong person for this job when it was originally pitched to me. I thought there were people who probably could handle a travel show better than me because I don’t have the attributes it takes to front a travel show.”
This man has always been more comfortable taking on the personas of his characters than actually being himself on camera.
“I don’t really open up to people on my own quite naturally. So, these are things that I had to work on, and I didn’t realize I’d be working on it on camera,” he said. “I’ve spent my life doing character work as a comedic character actor. [I’m] very comfortable being in character in front of a camera. But being myself is something that always made me a little nervous.”
Levy has been acting regularly for 50 years, shining as the doing-his-best father in the “American Pie” film series and on TV as, once again, the doing-his-best father in “Schitt’s Creek.”
As Levy discovered, it was a very different experience being himself — but he acknowledged it is sometimes good to get out of your comfort zone.
Levy confessed he loves familiarity and knowing what’s going to happen, so this job was an emotional journey as well as physical.
“You can’t always say no to things. You have to try things.”
Levy came away with a positive experience and had fun along the way. You will too if you watch along. “The Reluctant Traveler” premiered Feb. 24 on Apple TV+.
