“The Summer I Turned Pretty” is now streaming on Prime Video.A new drama on Prime Video, “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” is a riveting story of family, life, love, maturing into adulthood, sibling love and rivalry, and confusion about life itself. To put it bluntly, this story covers two generations of people who have been close for almost 20 years and have experienced a lot together. The series is based on the best-selling book by Jenny Han.
Two families have spent every summer together for decades in a spectacular beach house where the parents enjoy being away from the city and the kids enjoy the fun of summer and the beach. The characters are: Laurel (Jackie Chung) and her children Steven (Sean Kaufman) and Belly (Lola Tung), and Susannah (Rachel Blanchard) and her sons Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) and Conrad (Christopher Briney). This summer, the fathers are not largely involved in this drama that brings the two families even closer than ever.
So, the plot is that Belly has blossomed from a geeky tween into a beautiful teen and has the attention of the boys in the town. Her entire life, she has had a crush on Conrad but they have been more like siblings than anything else. But this summer changes everything. For the first time, Conrad sees Belly as a young woman instead of a little girl, and his brother Jeremiah becomes his rival, along with a local boy.
As the summer rolls on, family secrets unfold and a tragedy for one of them is looming in the not-to-distant future. But these people are close. The two moms and the four kids are like one large, loving family. So how will they maneuver this new development where both brothers are attracted to the same girl? And not to leave him out, but Steven also has some romantic interests this summer that brings in another entanglement. Plus, when Belly joins the Debutantes and decides to become part of the social set in the town, even more drama is in store for them.
So love, romance and heartbreak is in the air for this group in a summer that will change their lives. The story enforces the love and closeness of the group. They have spent so many summers together as one large family unit. They are family and friends but also soul mates in many ways. It might make viewers jealous of the wonderful relationships involved in this story. To have a close-knit group like this survive decades is a testament to the love and loyalty they share.
With this story from Han being part of a trilogy, there is little doubt the remaining stories will also be turned into Prime Video shows. “It’s Not Summer Without You” and “We’ll Always Have Summer” have not yet been announced. However, with “The Summer I Turned Pretty” getting attention and praise, the follow-up stories should soon be on the horizon.
