Brokaw: ‘Murdoch Mysteries’ returns for its 18th season
It’s hard to believe that this inventive and entertaining show is now on its 18th season. That’s a milestone for any show, and this season will feature the show’s 300th episode.
The 18th season has 22 episodes and includes some of the special and unique qualities for which the series is noted, mainly historic figures, as well as the usual characters that have made this a fun series to watch.
Detective William Murdoch (Yannick Bisson) is a beloved character. Along with his wife Dr. Julia Ogden (Helene Joy), Inspector Thomas Brackenreid (Thomas Craig), his wife Margaret (Arwen Humphreys), Constable George Crabtree (Jonny Harris) and his wife Effie (Clare McConnell), Constable Henry Higgins (Lachlan Murdoch), Detective Llewellyn Watts (Daniel Maslany) and Chief Coroner Violet Hart (Chanice Banton), this group has entertained viewers for years with its cases and personal relationships.
A new character joining Station House #4 is Inspector Albert Choi (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee), the new boss. Stepping into an established cast might be a bit daunting; however, it’s not too much for Lee, who said, “It’s a lot of fun stepping back in time, and I don’t think I’ve ever done a period piece like this before. It’s a show that remains innovative, that is family-friendly as well and a little bit on the edge, and it’s one of those shows that, although it is a procedural, it does sort of keep you on your toes in terms of trying to figure out whodunnit, as it were, and yeah, that’s a recipe for success.”
The cases they will be working on this season include a murder at a celebration of Charles Dickens, the theft of the world’s largest ruby, Murdoch as a bodyguard for a silent film star, and a skull found in Milton, Ontario. And yes, there is a holiday special as there often is in this series. Another case involves Murdoch and Crabtree investigating the murder of a fellow pretend soldier during their war reenactment.” There are plenty more cases to be solved during the 22 episodes.
Besides the big cases, the show looks at issues of the time: immigrants, hydro projects, low-income housing, factory worker’s strikes and more. “Murdoch Mysteries” takes place in the early 1900s.
The series is filmed in Canada and first aired in January 2008. It is based on the popular Detective Murdoch mystery novels by Maureen Jennings.
“Murdoch Mysteries” airs on Ovation TV and streams on Ovation NOW. The 18th season premiered Oct. 7. This is a good time to binge the first episodes if you have not yet begun watching Season 18.
