The show originated at the time the world was in chaos during lockdown. It was a challenge but they managed to produce a great show despite of the situation. They have come a long way and now the four episodes of season four are streaming on AcornTV.

As Finchham said, Chelsea “is the perfect location for a detective series …” Chelsea is an upscale area of West London and touted as a safe community. Unfortunately, this series highlights some bad elements, including murders and other crimes. But, as they say, this is fiction.

What can fans expect this season?

Detective Inspector Max Arnold (Adrian Scarborough) still resides on his houseboat, which adds a fun touch to the stories. He has also, finally decided to enter the dating world again. DS Layla Walsh (Vanessa Emme) is still an over-achiever and has a hard time leaving the office when the day is done. DC Connor Pollock (Peter Kankolé) and his wife want to grow their family. DC Jess Lombard (Lucy Phelps) is no-nonsense when out on the job but plenty of fun in the office. Ashley Wilton (Sophie Stone), the hearing impaired pathologist, is always there to add knowledge to the murders. And Max’s aunt Olivia (Frances Barber) has an interesting storyline through the season.

The season begins with Olivia getting mugged, and from there she is continually worried about her safety, to the point of paranoia. But is she really in danger? Max and his aunt have always been close, but her worrisome attitude brings them even closer.

The murders this season involve an undercover journalist, a beauty salon owner with a mysterious past, the Earl of Davenstock whose family is driven by tradition, and a new development project which has some dubious aspects.

When the renewal was first announced, Don Klees, SVP of Programming, Acorn TV, commented, “We are absolutely thrilled to be returning to Chelsea for yet another mystery-packed season of ’The Chelsea Detective,’ a true fan favorite among our passionate subscribers. We’re excited to be back on the case with the talented Adrian Scarborough and Vanessa Emme as the stakes have never been higher for DI Max Arnold, DS Layla Walsh and their team.”

Besides focusing on Chelsea, the fourth episode takes Max and Layla to Cambridge. This in itself adds a different look to the visuals as Cambridge is a very picturesque locale. And when a murder in Chelsea and one in Cambridge are linked to the same suspects, everything gets much more interesting. Not to mention, the Detective in charge of the Cambridge case is Layla’s cousin. Could she be coming to Chelsea in an upcoming season? We’ll have to wait and see.

The series is an interesting crime-solving drama with a fun group of characters. It’s not fast-paced. On the contrary, it is a quiet who-done-it with clues and suspects scattered about, but eventually the team is able to narrow everything down to the ultimate murderers, in their own, unique way.

The four episodes of “The Chelsea Detective” rolled out throughout this month and are all now available to stream on AcornTV, which can be an added subscription to Prime Video.
