Sophie Rundle stars as Joanna (Jo) Marshall in this crime thriller. In the first season she is confronted by disturbing facts about the people she knows and loves.

It all starts when a flood envelops the fictional town of Waterside and a baby is washed down the river. Even though she is pregnant, Jo plunges into the rushing water but is unable to grab the baby. Luckily a stranger dives in and ultimately rescues the baby. He then disappears down the river before anyone can identify him.

That’s just the opening of this tightly wound series. From there the body of a man is discovered in a “lift” (what we in the U.S. call an elevator). Originally he is assumed to have drowned in the flood, but it is discovered he had died two days earlier and placed in the lift.

Jo is on her way to being a detective. Her ability to read into things helps her unravel aspects of this strange case, however she is pregnant and as yet, not a detective. Even though it is not part of her job, Jo decides to investigate on her own and ultimately opens a can of worms that can jeopardize her career and her marriage.

Matt Stokoe is Pat, Jo’s husband and a detective on the force. He does not want his wife to put her career – or the baby – in jeopardy. But Jo forges on with her unsanctioned investigation.

Oh, what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive. But Jo is not deceiving everyone to get ahead. She genuinely wants to find out what happened to the man in the lift and why.

Season 2 begins a year after that fateful flood. Jo is now a full-fledged detective.

New murders are discovered as well as an environmental disaster that is causing medical issues for many and contaminating the river.

The underlying scheme Jo began investigating in season one continues. Someone in the department is corrupt and a murderer. Jo and Pat work through the six episodes to take this man down.

Throughout all the episodes there is one man who has been acting like a puppet master, pulling strings to his advantage. The finale finally sees some closure, but with a tragic ending for one of them.

“After the Flood” is dramatic, intense and violent. It is also mesmerizing. These two seasons make great weekend binges for hot summer nights. There are six episodes in each season. Although a third season has not been announced, there is ample reason to believe a third season could be coming.
