The Gone

“The Gone” is an intriguing and unusual drama bringing together the Irish culture and the Maori culture. There are two seasons currently available to stream, and as yet a third season has not been confirmed. With a big cliff-hanger, fans are clamoring for a season three.

Theo Richter (Richard Flood) is an Irish detective with a chip on his shoulder. When he is summoned to rural New Zealand by Judge Martin (Michelle Fairley) to find her missing daughter, his allegiance to her is strong so he hops on the next flight to Kiwi land. There he meets Detective Diana Huia (Acushla-Tara Kupe), who left her home town a while ago for bigger and better things, but is back to lead this investigation.

Once the investigation into the missing young woman gets underway, Theo is waylaid by his old friend, Aileen Ryan (Carolyn Bracken), an Irish journalist who couldn’t resist this intriguing story. A young Irish girl is missing in rural New Zealand. If she can crack the case it will make her career back home.

Diana is eager to wrap up the case and get out of town, however her past is not easy to escape. Her uncle Buster (Wayne Hapi) and aunt Wiki (Vanessa Rare) are always around to rehash memories and bring up the painful memory of her mother’s murder, although a body has never been found. Diana is rooted in Maori culture and that entails respect for her elders, but there are family secrets that creep into her feelings.

Diana and Theo are quite a pair, professionally. They are both truly dedicated to their jobs. She is in charge and Theo is out of his jurisdiction, however he adds a level of intelligence to the team and is a useful detective.

So, with several Irish coming into the fictional little town of Mount Affinity, the locals are a bit taken aback, however everyone wants to find the missing girl.

The second season adds to the mystery of the town and its surroundings. This season is mired in an another brutal murder, along with the disappearance of Aileen, keeping Theo in New Zealand to continue with these investigations. This newest victim is an Irishman who had ties to the mob back home. Now more Irish history is seeping into the somewhat peaceful little town.

Although it looks peaceful, the town of Mount Affinity has a brutal history. Several murders occurred years ago, and it looks like the serial killer has returned. As the clues add up, the mystery deepens.

“The Gone” is a dark, gripping series filled with emotional storylines and interesting characters, all woven into the setting of rural New Zealand.

The series is mainly filmed in the Waikato region of New Zealand, in the town of Te Aroha. The mountain, Mt. Te Aroha, plays an important element in the story and is the beacon of the town.

Viewers will get a deeper understanding of the Maori culture.

Episode No. 6 of Season No. 2 leaves viewers with a big cliff-hanger. There is no way the viewers want the series to end with that suspenseful scene. Seasons one and two of “The Gone” are now streaming on Acorn TV, which can be seen online, on an app, and as an add-on to a Prime membership.

Starting at $4.32/week.
