Elder W. Mark Bassett, the executive director of the Missionary Department and member of the General Authority Seventy, died Monday as a result of a traumatic brain injury, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced.

Bassett, 59, was with his family in St. George when the incident occurred, the Church said.

He had served in the General Authority Seventy since April 2016. In his role in the missionary department, Bassett oversaw the worldwide missionary efforts. His service coincided with historic levels of missionary service, the Church said.

“Elder Bassett will be deeply missed and always remembered for his great faith and dedicated service to the Lord Jesus Christ,” the Church said.

Bassett spoke in a devotional at the Missionary Training Center in Provo just days prior to his death. The Church said he bore testimony and implored missionaries to “Invite everyone to come – and do everything you can to help them enter this beautiful gate which leads to eternal life.”

He leaves behind his wife, Angela, his children and grandchildren.
