Provo’s Taylor King is the team’s third-string quarterback. He is a senior linebacker who hasn’t taken a snap in a month, but the one thing King figured out by watching quarterbacks Warner Jarman and Quynn Haws play in front of him was when you need a big play, look for running back Austin Alder.

King rallied Provo to an unlikely fourth-quarter comeback by hitting Alder on a pair of big pass plays, including a 43-yard touchdown pass with 1:08 left in the game to help the Bulldogs rally to beat Pleasant Grove 14-10 on Friday night.

Trailing 10-7, Provo had a chance to take the lead early in the fourth period when backup quarterback Haws drove the Bulldogs to the Viking 3-yard line before a Provo fumble killed the drive.

It didn’t look like the Bulldogs would get another chance because Pleasant Grove’s offense mounted a clock-consuming drive that finally stalled on the Provo 46.

The Vikings were forced to punt, but Pleasant Grove left Provo just 4:36 to come up with a score and quickly forced a fourth-and-15 at Provo 30.

King then came up with one of the wildest and most entertaining plays of the young season. He rolled out to his right, scrambled back to his left, dodged a few Viking defenders, backpedalled, rolled back to his right and then lobbed a 20-yard pass to Alder for the first down.

“The line made a lot of blocks, David Ojuka made a heck of a block and sprung me,” King explained. “I just let it fly and Alder was there. We got lucky.”

Pleasant Grove’s coaching staff was livid that a flag wasn’t called for illegal man downfield. Assistant coach Evan Thomas said the play never should have happened and wanted to show the replay to the officials, but cooler heads prevailed when head coach Dale Sampson was asked about it.

“That was a tough play to let go,” Sampson said. “We were one play away. A sack, a batted ball. It was just one of the those things. Our kids kept us in position to win. We just fell short.”

King’s clutch scramble pass to Alder set up the game winner. King hit Alder, on a slant route. Alder made a move, shook a tackler, and turned it up the sideline for the touchdown.

Provo took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when starting quarterback Warner Jarman hit Alder for a 69-yard touchdown pass.

Pleasant Grove answered with a halfback touchdown pass from LeSean Wilcox to Tabor Secretan that covered 56 yards.

Jarman left the game late in the second quarter after he was tackled on a running play. He said he had a mild separated shoulder and expects to play next week against Timpview, but that could change depending on another examination.

Pleasant Grove’s Braden Frampton intercepted a Haws pass at midfield that set up a 27-yard field goal from Mark Kennington to give the Vikings a 10-7 lead at the half.

It looked like the Viking defense would make the lead hold up until King and Alder hooked up for Provo’s fourth-quarter heroics.

Mitch Sanderson was Pleasant Grove’s top rusher with 62 yards. He combined with Braden Frampton, Ben Gerun, Mitch Clarine and Scott Bezzant to lead the defense.
