MOAB– The Hawk ba seball team is much better this year, according to Head Coach Lee R. Sorenson, but there is no question that they are struggling early.

The team fell to 0-4 after their weekend trip to the Moab Tournament, losing to the host team, Grand High and then dropping games to Park City and American Leadership Academy.

The Grand Red Devils have been out on their field nearly all winter long and their baseball experience showed against the Hawks on Friday.

Coach Sorenson placed Mt. Pleasant junior Tyler Daniels on the mound for the youngsters first start of the season and T.D. didn’t let his coach or his team down. Even though Tyler didn’t get a whole lot of support from his defense, he only gave up one run in each of the first two innings.

Offensively, North Sanpete was facing Austin Brewer, who pitched masterfully all game long, keeping the Hawks off-balance and limiting them to just three hits in the seven innings and threw a complete game shutout.

The game was actually within reach right up until the last at-bat for the Red Devils. Daniels had kept Grand to just three runs and all the Hawks needed was just a little run of their own to win the game, but in the bottom of the sixth, the host team scored six runs to put the game out of reach.

Of concern to Coach Sorenson was the four errors committed by his defense that aided Grand in continuing their rally and his team’s inability to get hits at key times in the game.

On Saturday, the Hawks played Park City, who was coming off a 22-8 shellacking of ALA and an 8-2 loss to Grand. Shaun Seely, another Mt. Pleasant junior, got the call to take the mound against the Miners and once more the team gave up nine runs in a 9-2 loss.

The good news was that the Hawks were able to put some runs on the board, but the bad news was once again on the defensive side.

North Sanpete hoped to get into the win column against the winless American Leadership, but three games in two days tends to wear out a team’s arms quickly, and it happened to the Hawks in this game and they lost 13-3.

Coach Sorenson sent three different pitchers out to pitch, with sophomore Trevyn Tucker getting the start. He was followed by another 10th grader, Kenny Rawlings, and then finally senior Colton Omer, but none of them could stop the bleeding as ALA piled up 13 runs to North Sanpete’s three.

One of the best bets for the team to break their streak will come Friday, March 23, against the Manti Templars in Manti.

The baseball team begins their region season at Delta with a doubleheader Tuesday, March 27.

Starting at $4.32/week.
