Pins on Pinterest: International travel
My husband and I are planning a long overdue international vacation in the coming weeks and I have been feverishly trying to make sure everything is in order for our Mexican getaway. Since it’s been nearly 10 years since I’ve traveled internationally, and my husband’s first time, I thought I would do some research on tips and tricks, especially when it comes to packing our carry-on bags! Here are some of the tips I’ve found. For even more, log on to our Vacation Tips board on Pinterest.
Packing right
While packing light is my ultimate goal for this trip — we really don’t want to pay for checked luggage — I also need to pack right, making sure I have the right wardrobe, toiletries, digital equipment and power cords, and more. Some of the best tips I’ve found include packing versatile clothing that can be paired with skirts, shorts and even pants. Shoes, too, must be versatile and comfortable. Before I even begin to pack, I need to ensure my carry-on meets all the airline size requirements, too. And then the strategic packing begins. I just might invest in some of those space-saver bags to make sure everything fits. I also plan on wearing my sneakers on the flight to save precious luggage space.
On the flight
Being in a tight, cramped space for several hours is no picnic, so I always come over-prepared with plenty of activities when on an international flight. Not only do I bring plenty of reading material — a magazine or two and all my current books loaded on my Kindle — but this year I’ll likely download a couple of movies to watch, too. Don’t forget your own headphones — noise canceling are the best. I also will plan on packing my tote with some snack foods like granola bars and some gum and mints, too. Other great ideas to bring along include a scarf or jacket in case the airplane cabin gets cold. Other ideas include a travel pillow, especially for those long flights and a sleeping mask. I certainly won’t forget my iPhone filled with music and games to enjoy on the flight as well. *Note to self, load up hubby’s iPod with new music, too.
Other essentials
When planning and packing for a vacation abroad, you should create a checklist of everything you need to do, pack, prep and plan. For instance, make sure you contact your bank to alert them that you might be making international purchases on your credit card. Contact your cell phone provider and ask them about international calling and data rates. Clean up data space on your smartphone and camera so you can take all the beautiful photos you want without running out of storage space. Get some money exchanged before arriving at your destination to allow for transportation and food costs once you land. If you are traveling outside of North America, be sure to bring an electric plug adapter. Before leaving, take time and download some apps on your smartphone — games, travel sites, translation apps, etc. You never know what you might need when you are out enjoying a new international adventure.
