Pins on Pinterest: Unicorn fun!

By Jennifer Durrant special To The Daily Herald - | Aug 24, 2017

I’ve been going through boxes from my childhood and I’ve come to a realization. History truly repeats itself, even when it comes to pop culture. The latest unicorn trend — Starbucks Unicorn Frappe, unicorn onesies, unicorn earbuds and phone chargers — actually began when I was growing up in the ’80s. I was a total unicorn geek! Stuffed animals, magnets, pins, ceramic figurines. If it had a unicorn on it, I owned it or wanted to own it. I have the box of stuff to prove it!

While this new version of the unicorn fascination has tweens and teens all giddy, my inner 10-year-old, too, is enjoying the fun. In fact, I thought I would share some unicorn party ideas for this week’s Pinterest column. Here are all the elements — food, games and decor — for a perfect, magical, unicorn party perfect for any little girl. The more unicorn-y the better! Unicorn food

As the Starbucks Unicorn Frappe taught us, unicorn food must feature a palette of pastel rainbow colors. The more pink, purple, teal and yellow the better. Those colors are especially popular when carefully swirled together, whether in piped frosting on a simple sugar cookie, a colorful snack mix like Muddy Buddies, sprinkles on dipped marshmallows or in the layers of a unicorn cake. The more colorful the better.

If you’re wanting to keep your unicorn party simple, have some colorful fun by whipping up a batch of Unicorn Popcorn. Combine popcorn with pastel-colored M&Ms, rainbow marshmallows from Lucky Charms cereal and pastel sprinkles. You can also create a beautiful, delicious Unicorn Cheesecake Dip by swirling food coloring into a simple cheesecake dip recipe. Dunk graham crackers for a fun snack.

Magical adventures

So the most obvious game for a unicorn-themed party is, well, pin the horn on the unicorn. Simple, straightforward and pure fun, this game will get tons of laughs, especially if you make sure to spin contestants extra long and have them hold the horn in front of their own forehead as they approach the hornless unicorn. You can also play Unicorn Ring Toss by decorating a traffic cone to look like a horn. Contestants then toss sparkly hula hoops over the horn.

Another great party activity is discovering what your unicorn name would be. You can then have the kids make a craft that highlights that name that they can take home. Other game ideas include Unicorn Shoe Toss, bingo and treasure hunts. Don’t forget to feature a photo booth wall at the party. With free printables, the kids can enjoy posing with unicorns, princesses, rainbows, castles and more.

Mythical decor

While a lot of your party food — don’t forget a unicorn cake — can easily become decor, it’s fun to add a few extra elements to your party room to enhance that mythical, fantasy atmosphere. Table runners, wall hangings, framed unicorn sayings and even party gift bags can all be arranged to create the perfect setting. Giant, round balloons can be easily transformed into adorable unicorn heads with some simple swipes of a marker, a golden horn and some other floral enhancements.

Filling up the rest of your party decor can be just as simple. Just gather up all the paper, streamers, balloons and crepe paper in pastel colors and begin crafting. You can create a wall featuring a giant rainbow and puffy clouds perfect for that photo booth. Make another rainbow to hover on the wall above the buffet table. Create colorful tassels to create a swag for the front of that table for a nice finishing touch.
