Fun with food: Author encourages playing with your food
Rice Krispies Treats feeling a little square? Try one shaped like a cheeseburger, an emoji, or a bike, thanks to fun-food fanatic Jessica Siskin’s book. We chatted with Siskin to get the scoop on how (and why!) she became the queen of cool cereal creations.
Getting her start
It all began with a cheeseburger made of cereal! Siskin remembers having an overwhelming impulse to make one. “When I finally stacked all the pieces together, I thought it was the coolest thing I’d ever seen. I posted a photo on Instagram, where I broke 100 likes for the first time.” That’s when she knew she was onto something. (She wasn’t wrong: Her @mister — krisp account now has nearly 50,000 followers!)
Finding her medium
“I started with Rice Krispies Treats because they were the only thing I knew how to make,” Siskin recalls. Now she loves them because they’re the perfect blank canvas for adding color and sculpting into shapes.
Gathering her inspiration
The day her Instagram account went live, custom order requests came pouring in. Siskin says she gets ideas from pop culture and politics but is also inspired by her customers and followers– and their unique requests! “I love receiving custom orders for treats I never would’ve thought of,” like the giant turkey club sandwich she recently made.
Spreading the fun
With her book due out this summer, fans will get their hands on all her secrets. Her biggest advice: Have fun with it. “Part of why I’ve become so skilled at making Rice Krispies Treats is because I really don’t overthink it.” Oh, and don’t forget to stock up on cooking spray. Coating your hands in it will make things much easier.
