Spanish Fork High School to perform ‘Alice in Wonderland’
Follow Alice down the rabbit hole on an enchanting and whimsical journey in Spanish Fork High School’s performance of “Alice in Wonderland.”
This two-hour play’s opening performance is on Thursday, and it runs through Saturday. It will be in the SFHS auditorium at 7 p.m. each of the three nights. There is also a matinee performance on Saturday at 3 p.m.
The script, adapted by Meg Grierson, SFHS theater director, turns the traditional tale by Lewis Carroll into a thematic story about Alice’s life.
“The plot of the play is closely based on the original books by Charles Dodgson [Lewis Carroll]. However, we’ve twisted it a bit,” said Grierson. “Basically, we’ve given the play a context which makes the story more meaningful. Each event in Wonderland echoes back to a situation in Alice’s life.”
Grierson insists that the play will touch people of all ages.
“This is a story about courageous love. Not the gentle, sweet, twittering kind … but the kind that picks you up when your entire life shatters. It’s about a girl facing her fears and finding her strength.”
Grierson wrote the script for this rendition of “Alice in Wonderland” with the help of Jerron Orton, Jen Grzybowski, Tyler Smith, Katie Morris and Haley Hoover who served as proofreaders and editors.
More than 50 students are in the cast of “Alice in Wonderland” and have spent months preparing on their own time through after-school rehearsals.
“All of the sets, costumes, props and special effects have been designed and operated by the students,” Grierson said.
The production team is made up of more than a dozen students who have gone above and beyond to help make the play a success. Haley Hoover is the director with Keli Adams as the technical director and Chris Cannon as the set director. Stage managers include Cardon Tanner and Brock Larson, who is also over sound design. Lawson Bendall is in charge of lighting design. Margie Covington, CariLyn Jenkins and Hailey Tuckett have supervised costume design. Josie Hamilton has been in charge of scenic art and Richard Lindsey with special effects.
“The entire community will enjoy this show,” Grierson said. “There’s something for everyone. It’s a lovable, familiar tale told in an entirely new way. Above all, ‘Alice in Wonderland’ is about enchanting magic in a world of harsh reality. Come escape with us.”
Tickets are $3 for opening night on Thursday and $5 for the remaining shows. Tickets can be purchased at Boothe Brothers Music in Spanish Fork, the SFHS finance office and online at www.myschoolfees.com, or at the door.
