Historical Society explores impact of the former RLDS Church in Utah
The Utah Valley Historical Society will explore a different religion’s impact on Utah — the Community of Christ, formerly known as the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Seth Bryant will host the event, “The History of Reorganization in Utah,” at 7 p.m. Tuesday evening in room 201 of the Provo City Library at Academy Square. Bryant explained that not all of the Prophet Joseph Smith’s supporters followed Brigham Young to Utah — various groups splintered off after Smith’s death. One of these groups, the RLDS Church, sent missionaries to Utah to convert the Mormons there back to what they believed was the right faith.
“The RLDS Church saw significant success in Utah in the 19th century, so much so that in Utah County alone, there were nine RLDS congregations,” Bryant said. After hitting a high of 29 congregations throughout the state, the Community of Christ church only had three congregations by 2013.
Bryant will discuss the importance and impact of the Community of Christ in Utah’s history.
