Wolferts sisters not going to Kansas, future still up in the air
Two sisters who were “missing” for about a year and a half are still in the Slate Canyon Juvenile Detention Center, though their future home may soon be decided in court.
Danielle and Sydney Wolferts, 15 and 16, respectively, were found at 3:30 a.m. Jan. 3 in Pleasant Grove with their mother, Michelle Wolferts, at the Green Grove Apartments. The two were reported missing in July 2014 while they were visiting their mother.
According to their older sister, Brittany Wolferts Dangerfield, it was decided Monday in Juvenile Fourth District Court that Danielle and Sydney would not be going to Kansas with their father, Brian Wolferts. Instead, the two will be staying in Utah.
“I’m really glad for their sake, not just because they’re not going to Kansas but because this is what they actually wanted,” Dangerfield said.
The big question now is where in Utah they will stay. That question will likely be answered Friday in their next detention review.
“It was good to see that they’re healthy. I don’t know if I can say they’re happy,” Dangerfield said.
She said the most discussed candidates to gain custody of the girls are their paternal grandparents. She also said her grandparents don’t speak to her much since she spoke out about pedophilia allegations against her father.
“We all love my dad’s parents, but unfortunately they disowned me when I spoke out against my dad,” Dangerfield said.
In a video the Wolferts sisters sent in to the “Dr. Phil” show while they were missing, the girls say, “We want our dad to stop trying to control us and stop telling hurtful lies.”
In a petition filed with the court on June 26, 2014, Dangerfield discussed the emotional, mental and physical abuse her father inflicted upon her and her younger sisters over the years, detailing times when he said Dangerfield was “brainwashed” against him.
Additionally, Dangerfield said her father never completed a psychosexual evaluation ordered by Dr. C.Y. Roby.
“They claim that all these charges have been lifted, but that’s not true,” she said.
In the psychosexual evaluation, Roby states Brian Wolferts talked to him about being aroused by children. Roby also recommended that he receive sex addiction therapy.
Brian Wolferts has publicly denied these and many allegations, saying his ex-wives tried to turn his daughters against him. During the “Dr. Phil” show, after listening to Danielle and Sydney’s custodial demands, he said, “It just doesn’t sound like them. Not their true selves.”
Dangerfield said on Tuesday and Wednesday many people on her mom’s side came forward offering guardianship of Danielle and Sydney. Dangerfield said she and her husband will also offer guardianship.
“There are multiple good homes that they could go to,” she said. “I’ve fought for custody over the past two years and I plan to continue offering.”
Until then, Sydney and Danielle are being held at the Slate Canyon Juvenile Detention Center, which Dangerfield said makes the girls look almost like criminals.
“It was really hard to see them in the prison uniforms,” she said.
For now, the only people allowed to see Sydney and Danielle are their paternal grandparents. Dangerfield said that is confusing to the family because their mother, who was in jail briefly for custodial interference, was allowed phone calls to and from anyone.
“They’re being treated even worse than criminals,” Dangerfield said.
Dangerfield has been chronicling her sisters’ story on her blog, wolfertssisters.blogspot.com, which she updates almost daily.
