Dallyn Vail Bayles to sing beloved Broadway, inspirational tunes for home crowds
Two concerts at the SCERA Center for the Arts this week aim to keep the Valentine’s Day spirit alive a little longer.
Acclaimed actor and singer Dallyn Vail Bayles will perform a selection of beloved Broadway and inspirational music onstage in Orem on Thursday and Saturday to celebrate the holiday.
“I want these concerts to be a special Valentine’s experience with songs about the joys and challenges we all experience in love and marriage,” Bayles said. “I’m confident this will be a very romantic and enjoyable evening.”
He said he enjoys singing Broadway and inspirational music because of the great impact it can have on listeners’ hearts and lives. This potential impact is what motivated Bayles to pursue a career as a Broadway performer and Christian inspirational singer in the first place, he said.
“(These songs) uplift and inspire people in unique and powerful ways through the stories they tell and the messages they share. These songs express the lessons and experiences of life, as well as the longings of the heart and soul,” Bayles said. “I love singing Broadway and inspirational music because these are the songs that move me personally as a performer.”
Bayles, a Utah native, graduated from BYU with a bachelor’s in music dance theater in 2004 and has since become a renowned artist, having recorded three albums and performed with Broadway touring groups of “The Phantom of the Opera” and “Les Misérables.”
He has also played prominent roles in several productions of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including that of Hyrum Smith in “Joseph Smith: The Prophet of the Restoration” and Joseph Smith in the “Nauvoo Pageant.”
The performer said he is especially excited about his upcoming concerts at the SCERA Center for the Arts because he will present several songs never performed for an audience before with his singing partner, Amy Shreeve Keeler.
Keeler, a Utah native and BYU alumna who worked as a Disney vocalist and actress in Orlando and Hong Kong, has starred in several local productions, including playing the roles of Ariel in “The Little Mermaid” and Amneris in “Aida” at the Hale Center Theatre in recent years.
The two will sing new songs from “The Greatest Showman,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Frozen,” “Tangled” and “Moulin Rouge” on Thursday and Saturday in addition to some Broadway classics, including favorites from “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Aida,” “South Pacific” and “The Little Mermaid.”
The concerts will give Bayles, an Orem resident, an opportunity to sing for his home crowd. He said Utah County has been his home for several years and has always felt like a home away from home.
“We’ve made some wonderful relationships over the years, which makes performing here all the more thrilling,” Bayles said. “I love performing for a home crowd — they always have such great energy and are so gracious. It’s a wonderful feeling you can’t get anywhere else.”
Orem and the SCERA are particularly special to Bayles, as he received some of his early musical theater training there. Following his junior year at Green River High School, Bayles spent a summer in Orem participating in a SCERA youth theater camp, where he took acting, singing and dance classes. The youth group also rehearsed for and performed a fully staged production of “The Wizard of Oz” at the SCERA Shell Outdoor Theatre, Bayles said.
“Looking back, I realize how important this experience was for me, not only in my development as a performer, but in introducing me to this awesome community of wonderful and talented people, many of whom are still dear friends of mine today,” Bayles said. “The SCERA is a very special place to me for that reason, which makes performing a concert here all the more personal.”
Bayles said he hopes his upcoming shows will provide “a wonderful and enjoyable evening” for the audience at the SCERA Center for the Arts.
“I hope they will lose themselves in the songs we sing and be moved by the feelings, memories and stories they create,” Bayles said. “I hope they walk away with a renewed love for and commitment to their spouse or significant other and their families, because these are the relationships that matter most in life and they are worth fighting for … and singing about.”
