Provo man arrested after burglarizing home

By Rhett Wilkinson daily Herald - | Mar 6, 2018

A Provo man was booked Tuesday into the Utah County Jail after he broke into the victim’s house and got into the bedroom after slashing at the door.

Police reports state James Covington and another male entered a residence uninvited. The other male shot at the homeowner, and Covington was arrested Sunday on suspicion of aggravated burglary, a first-degree felony, according to the probable cause statement.

Covington and another male broke into a Provo residence, breaking in to “retaliate” against a man with whom they had fought the prior evening, according to a police report.

The man had been worried about the two men breaking into his residence, so he put his mattress against the door of his bedroom in an effort to fortify himself as he slept, reports state.

Covington began kicking at that door after getting into the house, using a knife as he “slashed” and “stabbed” the door “several times” to try to get into the room, according to the report.

After a kick, the door “buckled” before Covington saw the victim flee through his window, reports state. Covington and the other suspect took off after the victim. Then, Covington’s associate shot at the victim as the victim was “running away,” reports state.

Covington and the suspect fled the scene, according to the report.

Covington was also cited with two class-A misdemeanors for possession or use of a controlled substance, reports state.
