Norm Thurston discusses experience, combatting high costs in campaign for House District 62
Norm Thurston
Norm Thurston is a Republican candidate for the House District 62 seat. Below are his responses to a six-question survey sent to him by the Daily Herald. This interview may have been edited for brevity and clarity.
1. Why is the position you are running for important?
The decisions made in the Utah Legislature directly affect the safety, economic well-being, and quality of life for every family in our district. Representing parts of Provo and Springville means being a steady, experienced voice during a time of rapid growth. This position is vital because Utahns expect their government to be efficient, accountable, and focused on practical solutions rather than political theater. We need proven, conservative leadership that protects our freedoms, manages our resources wisely, and keeps Utah the best place in the nation to live, work, and raise a family.
2. What unique qualities, attributes, skills and experiences do you possess that make you the best candidate in this race?
Experience and a proven track record matter. I have spent years working inside state government–including as a policy adviser to the Utah Department of Health–and I currently serve as executive director of the National Association of Health Data Organizations. Over my service in the Utah House, I have built a reputation for rolling up my sleeves, diving deep into complex state budgets and data, and passing meaningful reforms. I understand how state agencies operate, how legislation is actually written, and how to get things done for our community without resorting to empty rhetoric.
3. Please explain your priorities if elected, as well as why you believe you are uniquely capable of achieving those priorities.
My top priorities center on the issues that matter most to Utah families:
- Affordability & Fiscal Discipline: To combat high costs, we must cut government waste, lower taxes, and reduce burdensome regulations. I’ve fought to lower taxes on Social Security benefits and eliminate unnecessary state fees.
- Smart Economic & Housing Solutions: We need to increase our housing supply by encouraging local governments to be more flexible and open to options, supporting job growth, and maintaining a pro-business climate.
- World-Class Public Education: We must ensure every student receives a top-tier education. I will continue supporting policies that increase teacher pay and school funding while giving local schools the flexibility to focus on neighborhood priorities and empowering parents.
My deep experience in state budgeting and health policy gives me the technical skills necessary to craft and pass sound, balanced budgets and lasting reforms.
4. Please describe how you view the importance of compromise in politics and provide an example from your own experiences that highlights your perspective.
In a legislative body representing a diverse state, compromise isn’t a sign of weakness; it is how durable, effective policy is made. If you want to change lives and improve government, you have to listen to different viewpoints, respect people of good faith, and find common ground. Throughout my time in the Legislature, whether working on complex health care delivery reforms or balancing state appropriations, I’ve found that the best solutions come when you sit down across the aisle, focus on data and shared goals, and refuse to let the “perfect” be the enemy of the “good.”
5. How will you balance the views of the vocal public, your political party, and your own understanding and knowledge as an elected representative (a challenge highlighted by issues such as data centers, water usage, redistricting, environmental concerns, taxes, etc.)?
An elected official’s ultimate loyalty is to the people they represent. While political parties and vocal interest groups play a role in the process, complex issues like water security, data center development, and taxation require rigorous, science-backed analysis and a long-term view. I believe in listening carefully to constituents, consulting technical experts, and looking at empirical data rather than reacting to short-term political panic. My focus has always been principled, transparent leadership that answers directly to the families of our community.
