Eagle Mountain school placed on lockdown after man with rifle spotted nearby

By Rhett Wilkinson daily Herald - | Mar 14, 2018

A man with a rifle outside a Maverik gas station in Eagle Mountain told police he was exercising his Second Amendment right and open-carrying to promote gun awareness, while a nearby school was participating in the National School Walkout.

Rockwell Charter High School was put on lockdown at about 10:30 a.m. for an unspecified time, according to Sgt. Spencer Cannon with the Utah County Sheriff’s Office, though its lockdown status was lifted before 1:30 p.m.

Black Ridge Elementary School, having gotten calls from “patrons,” also called police, according to the Alpine School District.

“Maverik, in this case, did not want (the rifle carrier) to stay at the property,” Cannon also said.

Police were sent to check on the 21-year-old man between 10 and 10:30 a.m. Wednesday and said that the unnamed man didn’t pose a threat, but the man’s actions were “ill-advised” in “manner and location.”

A teacher at Rockwell, which Cannon said is less than 100 yards from the man’s Maverik location, said that the man was “supposedly protesting the student protest at Rockwell.” Cannon said the man was promoting his view of “gun safety” in “not a wise way.”

The man with the rifle told UCSO officers he was headed to a Walmart in Saratoga Springs, Cannon said, though the Saratoga Springs Police Department, informed by UCSO police of the man’s Walmart claim, did not see him there, according to David Johnson, spokesman for Saratoga Springs.

“We didn’t have any reports of the gentleman coming to the businesses in Saratoga Springs,” Johnson said.

UCSO police will not be pursuing the man further, Cannon said.

“There wasn’t a reason to actively follow him or anything,” Cannon remarked. “He did not give us any reason to be alarmed.”

No charges were filed against the man, Cannon said, noting that the man did not break any laws.

From the Maverik, the man was “ordered to leave and trespassed from the property,” the USCO stated.
